Although they differ on the competitve sport front, I find that if you enjoy the character development in either anime, you'll enjoy them both. Although, Kimi Ni Todoke focuses more on Sawako's self-development, both animes display highschool friends as the main support system for that development to take place. If you like high school settings, first loves, and characters' desire to improve themselves, you'll enjoy both Chihayafuru and Kimi ni Todoke.

Although displaying a different kind of relationship, Usagi Drop has very similar tropes. More realistic but enchanting in its own way, Usagi Drop is another heart warming story of the development of unconditional love.
