The TV series really amused me. You'd think it's just another otaku pandering show made on popularity of a picture of some sort of gunslinger girl with burning eyes, turned into a song and an OVA with a interesting concept. TV series doesn't continue the OVA story, it's a complete reboot, but the basics remained the same. Mato is still the cheerful and energetic girl, Yomi is still shy and quiet, Yuu still plays basketball, and girls in the dreamworld still try to kill each other.
Yes, it's yet another school anime, but the writers don't let the audience get bored with the everyday teenager
...
life they saw already in thousands of other series. Mato literally dashes trough her life, and the school is a mere point of meeting for the main characters, from where further adventures can go in totally unexpected ways. Every episode girls are facing a new crisis and a new conflict. They often seek the help of the mysterious Saya, who invites the troubled students for a coffee or tea and gives them small advices. Alongside the main plot, there's a huge battle of well armored and equipped girls that symbolise the suffering of each character. Unlike the OVA, the connection between a real and dream world is stronger, and later the plot revolves around that thin boundary, as the heroines learn how to fight with the pain and bad emotions.
Animation is very well done. The sceneries are just beautiful and climatic, and characters perfectly show their emotions with body speak and their faces. "Fantasy" battle are done with fluid and over the top CGI. Voice actors did their best to add to the tension and they sound just according to character's current mental state. Both fans of crazy action and artistic scenes won't be disappointed with Black Rock Shooter. A great watch!
