i'm trying not to be mean, but 4 is as high as i can give for this anime :( sorry.
personally i kinda regret watching guilty crown before watching code geass. i found so much similarity between the twos but in many ways, i found code geass much more enjoyable than guilty crown, and after all the disappointment from guilty crown, it kinda drain my excitement and expectations when watching code geass (which i think could be one of my favorite anime if i hadn't had guilty crown's flashback every time i watch code geass episodes). anyway, lets see why i give such desperation
...
upon guilty crown...
(4) for story: the main ideas were actually unique, the concept of "king's power" that can utilize the hearts of the people, how the each person have different shape of hearts depending on their personalities, how the catastrophe began with a virus pandemic derived from extraterrestrial matter and so on. the problem here is that none of the ideas developed properly. the anime contained too much fantastic ideas all in one-short-series (25 episodes) and not a single idea was explained well. the plot was rather unclear for me, and above that, i didn't really get why the characters did what they did. usually when a hero's life changed dramatically from their ordinary life, there's gotta be something extremely urgent or unexpected happened that driven him as the motive. in this anime, however, nothing seemed to be a good motive of everything the characters doing. in the end, i don't feel the mood in any of the scenes and all i did was trying to watch it as fast as i could (i couldn't bear not to watch the ending when i already started watching). the heroic scenes didn't give me the thrill, the romantic scenes didn't touch my heart, and even the tragic scenes only scratch a bit of my sadness. of all the problems, i would say the root problem is that it was too short. with so many ideas, characters, and plots like that, it's impossible to pin them all together within just 25 episodes. imagine watching 7 books of harry potter all in a single movie!
(6) art and (8) sound: the only things i liked from this anime were the songs and character designs. the costumes were nice, effects were great, and above all, the songs were actually the reason why i watched this anime in the first place.
(2) for character: despite of the designs, i totally feel that the characters were lacking personalities. none of them stands out, most of the characters were inconsistent throughout the story since they didn't have certain significant traits from the beginning. if you ask me, i can't even describe the good sides/ bad sides of the characters (i might just end up saying 'the hero is a nice person and the bad guy is bad'). all the characters ended up having insignificant personalities as the whole story didn't seem to support characters development, nor did it support relationships between characters.
(2) for enjoyment: as i said, i try to watch this anime as fast as i could (i almost wanted to press that fast forward button several times) and sadly, this is the first anime that made me loose my patience. i expect so much since the soundtrack clips seemed so cool but ended up getting dissapointed.
