In 1965, Go Nagai (who wasn't a professional mangaka at the time) was going around submitting work to various magazines until one day, Shonen Sunday paired him up as an assistant to the legendary mangaka Shotaro Ishinomori. Go was an assistant for Ishinomori for a short time during the first run of Cyborg 009. Through both of these series, you can tell that Nagai and Ishinomori both have the same disdain for war, as both manga expresses concern towards the human race and it's desire to cause conflicts. However, Cyborg 009 is a lot more optimistic with this outlook, while Devilman goes in deep when it comes to showing us the worst possible scenario that can arise out of war. Cyborg 009 is an enjoyable read for people who enjoyed the old school art and messages advocating for peace in Devilman.
