anyone writing any more than a couple hundred words on the basis of a light novel translated by complete amateurs has already lost the little credibility they may have had. if you really cared enough to spend dozens or hundreds of days watching anime much less reviewing 18 light novels (which in itself requires its own degree of mental illness) just learn the damn language and recognize that this series is good because it is about an autistic guy and an autistic girl and is funny. there is no hint of pretension on the part of the author nor the protagonist. anyone who claims so

has wasted hours they could have spent learning japanese instead reading jumbled high school english prose that makes no effort to capture any of the lightheartedness, or the wit, or the ability to actually dig into the shoes of an angsty teen who thinks he knows everything which the author so masterfully projects, self-insertion or not (has to be the dumbest review trope i’ve ever heard. who cares as long as the book is good?) (there's a better argument for the author's self-insert being hiratsuka, the teacher!). please just learn how to read japanese — you can start by watching anime you’ve already watched with japanese subtitles and you can supplement that with any books you might like — and i recommend this one for that purpose. loved it.
