Where to begin...
Whenever I start a slice-of-life anime series, I'm always a little hesitant to fully jump in (kind of like jumping into a cold pool, I guess) because they are quite common and you don't know whether or not you're going to end up enjoying them. However, every once in a while you make the plunge and end up immersed in a wonderful new world.
I believe Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo is one of those beautiful gems. This is an anime that really shines the more you watch. The artwork and the music are very good, but these aren't even it's strongest fortes.

As you can tell from my scores, Clannad is one of my all-time favorite anime series...
I first picked up Clannad on a whim and wasn't expecting very much from it's cover picture. Needless to say, that first impression quickly disappeared as I became more and more engrossed with each passing episode. I'll admit that the art isn't the best I've seen, but the story, the characters, and the way that they interact were truly masterful. Friendship, love, struggle, and sorrow are elements that everyone has experienced to one degree or another.
