The plot is clearly meant to work in stages: from action to a psychological drama to surrealism. However, the action is cliché, which is to be expected due to the work's aim at deconstructing tropes in the genre, however that doesn't make it any fun to watch.
The drama is honestly well done, with a couple of episodes in this phase being actually quite good. However, the characters' motivations are all quite straightforward, so the show can't seem to find enough depth in them to warrant the runtime spent in this phase, instead spending most of it's time running in circles. that is introduced near the end which introduces a lot of interesting drama into this mix which I found fascinating. Unfortunately, this character's impact on the series is almost entirely contained to a single episode, and one near the end at that.
The series overall is just slow, taking a lot of time worldbuilding. This in and of itself is not a sin, but it never seems to fully pay off. The entire premise seems to be building to the last two episodes, and so whether the show is worth it, at least in my view, depends on whether or not these last two episodes are enjoyable. Having watched them, I have a hard time seeing how anyone could enjoy them. The visuals are absolutely terrible, consisting mostly of recycled footage and low-quality animation, with what little proper animation was made for the episode of little note.
These last two episodes almost single-handedly contribute to labels such as "experimental", "symbolic", etc. being thrown at the series. However, the "experimental" nature of the animation is just visually obvious budget cuts. The story itself over these two episodes is largely a rehash of previous ideas, with a moral/thematic resolution very loosely tied on to the end.
Overall, there are some good visuals and character showcases at certain points, but they hardly make the full runtime of the series worth it.
