Reminiscent of childhood romance / puppy love back when I was younger. Not that I was some gigachad that dated a girl with big boobas. or that things went as smoothly and turned out perfectly like how the show plays out. For all the critical people hating on the story and characters, and how its unrealistic or its too cringe, I feel confident when I say that you probably have never experienced puppy love and have it reciprocated back. But this show also isnt a "masterpiece" that so many people claim that it is.
Side note: I think the show would do just fine, or maybe

even better, if the female lead wasnt over sexualized esp since most girls that age havent grown into their bodies yet or are just beginning to. but thats neither here nor there.
I struggled through most of season 1, and for the first few episodes, i just didnt like...any of the characters for the most part. The two MC were just the most textbook, generic characters that we've all seen in a million different animes already. But the characters became more fleshed out and less corny by the end of season 1 and through out season 2.
This show is the idealized version of what puppy love is like, but thats fine. It's not supposed to be the most accurate portray of what that looks like. From the critical reviews i've seen here, idk what to tell you, but most of the time, puppy love is cringe, awkward, embarrassing, and corny. But it's also the purest and most innocent type of loves a person can go through growing up. This show reminded me of a lot of that similar kind of childhood romance i had going through middle school and high school. While its not a super accurate portrayal in regards to behavior, i have done things that are equally as cringe when i was younger, so i found it relatable still.
As someone who was very shy and self conscious when I was younger, I found the MC to be somewhat relatable esp as the show went on. As for Yamada, i found her to be less relatable since shes almost fits the manic pixie dream girl trope that we too often see. There is a bit more nuance and depth to her character, but just barely.
To anyone that is saying, this show is only for delusional people who want to fantasize about having some dream girlfriend, and the main characters are not relatable at all and are all super cringe, i almost feel a little sad for you because if thats really all you were able to take away from watching, then im gonna guess that a girl never was into you at that age.
One reviewer was literally "infuriated" (chill man itll be ok) by how shy the mc was. This is middle school, and you're expecting him to be some alpha gigachad. i know i was incredibly shy around that age, and my first "gf" if you can even call it that, was us basically eventually telling that we liked each other on AIM and that was about it. we were both too shy to talk to each other in person at that age.
childhood romances are awkward, weird, cringe, embarrassing, etc because kids are usually weird, shy, strange little creatures still trying to discover who they are and how to show it. if you cant understand or relate to that, then i think its safe to assume you dont know because you never got to experience puppy love relationships for yourself. also, the argument that this anime is just escapism, it's like, what? welcome to literally every single form of entertainment. have you never read a book, watch a show/film, played a video game, etc? Entertainment almost exclusively exists for us to escape from the banalities of our mostly regular, boring and monotonous life.
This show is also not, imo, super accurate in terms of portrayal of characters and story. It definitely isn't a masterpiece in my eyes. But thats fine. Its relatable to some degree, and thats enough to be able to find parts of the show to be quite cute and endearing regardless of the character/story flaws.
This show's score heavily reminds me of A Silent Voice, which is imo a masterpiece, and the score almost single handedly carries scenes at times, especially the ones that are meant to evoke emotions. And literally just checked, and ok. This makes sense. Im not surprised at all that this is the same composer.
The score carries any of the important scenes with its gentle, minimalist approach, mostly driven by a single piano but some limited instrumentation.
Overall, the show is ok. Its far from the masterpiece that so many reviewers claim it is. Despite its flaws though, one can still find the show enjoyable. If you made it through to season 1, then you were able to power through the worst of it. I actually tried watching s1 two times before, and always ended up dropping it after 2 or 3 episodes. But once you get over the first couple of episodes, the characters get better.
6.5/10 is how i feel about the show, so ill just say 7. its clear a lot of people very much enjoyed this series so far, so these ratings are all just meaningless opinions anyway. shouldnt listen to me or anyone really. you should just watch and decide for yourself.

For anyone that's into motorsports like f1, you will enjoy this anime.
the show (at least the first season) is grounded in reality for the most part, and gives some insight on what goes on in the paddock in something like f4. while there is a bit of skepticism of whether or not its actually possible to have a competitive car that can compete in f4, maybe the cost is significantly lower in japan. you still need a significant amount of capital that is required to be able to compete even in f4 that tiny local sponsorships and hard work just cant cover. unless those sponsorships ... Perfect anime for those trying to justify their alcoholism.
In all seriousness, the anime goes for a pleasant, chill vibe, and achieves it. Episodes are formulaic, and essentially is a toned down, more adult iteration of food wars. Character makes drink, gives drink to another character(s), takes a sip, insert surprised, orgasmic reaction while exclaiming how the drink is so good! Then you will get a long winded exposition dump-- what ingredients were used and the methods used and some sort of backstory behind the drink or character making the drink. Let's be real, no one watching this actually cares about the little details, and whether or not ... May 26, 2024

Is this show great? A master piece even?
Important thing to note: Stay away from the machine translated subs. It will take longer for fan subs to be uploaded on places, but it's worth waiting for them. The MTL subs made my initial viewing experience a lot more confusing and just bad. There are certain fan subs that typically have better translations, but if you watch GBC on streaming, just be aware that some sites use pretty bad translations which can affect your viewing. The better subs will take a minimum of 5-6+ hours after airing to be uploaded, so if you're watching it any earlier, ... May 10, 2024
That Time I Got Reincarnated at the snooze table.
For 6 straight episodes, it was just a bunch of people gathered around a table spouting off exposition or what their next plans are going to be with nothing actually happening. There is so little animation done this season that I genuinely dont know if the quality is the same, better, or worse. I am not joking when I say it's mostly still frames that switch between characters (sometimes not even with mouths moving) as a character dumps exposition or is engaged in the dullest dialogue. With so much talking thats been done the last 6 episodes, i sure ... |
