I was completely bewitched by this movie. Sure, it's quite short so the story is rather simple and concise but for me it's like a signature of director. Makoto Shinkai once again proved that he is a genius of short forms.
Writing review for something that you love is fun, but may be not very interesting for a reader. I could just write "everything was perfect". Because for me it was. Of course not everyone might enjoy the show. Its completely normal. Each of us has different perception. But if you like slow pace, stories focused on conversations and nuances then you will love it,
...
too.
I read many reviews and I must confess that I am surprised how often people write that the age gap between protagonists is distasteful.
I believe it is a mark of our times that each relationship is sexsualised. There is absolutely nothing in the movie that would suggest that kind of relation between main characters and yet it's an issue that appears frequently. For me it's only natural that two lonely souls might find consolation in each other company. Just as natural that 15 year old boy can fall in love for it.
What I like most in Shinkai's movies is ending that doesn't serve us all the answers on the silver tray but leaves viewer with the situation that is open. We can interpret the story freely since its not closed. Each of us can imagine different scenario for their future.
In my opinion the best Shinkai's creation. If I had written this 10 years ago, I would have written that I am waiting for more works like this.
Unfortunately, it's 2024 and I know that no such thing has happened. Movies that followed this one are different and I can't say I like that change in Shinkai's direction. I hope he will yet return to creating enchanted worlds like the one he invited us to in Garden of words.
