The Journey of Elaina is a mixed bag, but that’s not a bad thing. This show is a mixed bag in that the type of episode the viewer gets varies greatly. Episodes like “The Girl as Pretty as a Flower/Bottled Happiness” are dark and leave a lot for the viewer to think about and unpack, while episodes like “Royal Celesteria” are more fun and exploratory. For the most part, this show nails parallelism between Nike’s stories and Elaina’s experiences, which allows most episodes to leave a big impact. Although, this show can tell a great story, the potential of some episodes is completely squandered by ... clichés and predictable outcomes. “The Ripper” is the worst case of this. The show’s pacing can also be pretty awkward. In some episodes time seems to fly too fast for a single story. The pacing isn’t bad, but it could definitely be improved to make the show’s more thematic episodes land better.
Elaina is who ultimately make The Journey of Elaina unique. She is uniquely cocky, self-centered even. While that self-centered attitude leads Elaina to make some questionable decisions, it is understood why she makes those decisions, and thus the viewer can make sense of it. Her decisions and attitude add another layer to the show’s stories regardless of tone, and so, Elaina leaves a big impact. Other notable characters include Saya, Fran, and Sheila. Their biggest role in the story is to provide minor development for Elaina. While there’s nothing exceptional about them, they do add a level of charm that wouldn’t be there otherwise, so their presence is very much welcome.
Artistically, The Journey of Elaina doesn’t look very unique from afar, but it does enough to stand out. The show provides plenty of delicious desktop level backgrounds. The backgrounds tend to be very detailed and lively, and it creates a very immersive feeling. The character designs are a bit plain, but they’re pleasing to the eye. The show’s animation is generally conservative, but the show does have some nice stints of animation where it’s more applicable. The fight scene in “Elaina, the Apprentice Witch” is probably the best example of this.
The sound design wasn’t too notable. The voice acting was fine. The tracks weren’t nearly as immersive as the art, but there were a couple memorable tracks. For example, the track that plays at the end of “The Princess Without Subjects” really sets the mood and allows the episode’s conclusion to leave a greater impact. There’s nothing here that I would say stands out as bad.
The Journey of Elaina is a pretty decent show, and while it may not appeal to everyone, it is a fairly unique show that I think is worth a watch.
