This is my first review so sorry in advance for how horrible it is most likely going to be.
Story (7):Higurashi is a very intersting anime yet may not seem so until quite late in the series. At the very end of Higurashi i thought that the story was creative and brilliant, but that was the problem.
Not until the end or the last half of the series did i actually start to really enjoy the anime and start to understand what was going on. But once you do you start to see how good the series really is. But this means sitting through all the
...
first arcs or question arcs each with there own strengths and weaknesses and each a story in itself giving very subtle clues as to what is really going on. And i found asking the audience to sit through them with no explanation a big ask.
But then the answer arcs kick in and proper clues to the overall mystery are given and this is when what is really going on can actually be figured out.
If the story was of this standard from the start i could have easily given it an overall of 9 but then again if it wasn't set out the way it is it would lose its impact so it's a dilema. On one hand i found myself quite bored in the first half of the series alot of the time yet on the other hand in the second half i was hooked and thought it was done brilliantly.
Art (8): I know alot of people dont like the art and animation of this series but i found it enjoyable 'offness' of it seemed to fit the series and i liked the colours used.
Sound (8): The opening and ending songs are very good that once the series gets a further in fit quite well.
I didn't often take notice of the background music of the series so most of the time it didn't add or distract anything from the series, but occasionally i heard something i thought was done quite well and actually did add something to the series but never heard anything i thought was done terribly.
Characters (9): There aren't many characters that stay essentially the same through each of the arcs of the anime and i found myself enjoying this fact. When you think you actually knew a bit about a character they could change and this kept the anime at least a little interesting even when the story or other aspects let it down.
Each character seems to be pretty much insane through each arc acting very normal and calm in horrible situations not caring about gruesome things people might have done and this not affecting there realtionship what so ever or in a very minimal way, yet acting like morons in everyday situations. This was one of the only constants for most characters and in most animes i would have most likely hated this fact and rated the character score very low but in of Higurashi i very much enjoyed that they were like this and honestly im not sure why.
Enjoyment (7): For the same reasons Story was let down so was enjoyment.
Overall (7): At the end of this anime i was tempted to rate it higher for how much i enjoyed the last half of the series, yet in the end i left it at a seven as i thought the first half let it down quite a bit.
I am expecting the second season to be very good even if it keeps the same formula as the first series though as there is at least some explanation of the story so i'll just have to wait and see how much i enjoy it.
