Shinsekai Yori is an amazing anime that questions the human condition without sympathy or bias and builds a world so convincing and complete that you almost feel like an expert on it by the time you finish the series. Watching the anime, an ominous air is apparent even from the start when the main characters are still children. The art style is truly unique among the anime I've watched. Landscapes, buildings and outfits are realistic and detailed while the characters wear versatile anime archetype faces. The mood of the show is set by its use of bright color palletes to create familiarity and a sense

of comfort while surrealist, almost nightmarish artstyles here and there remind you that this is an anime that deals with the dark recesses of the human mind and the unnerving unknown out there in the world. The story might seem slow at first but imagine being flung into a future where society and life on earth itself are completely unlike anything we can relate to. To get our bearings we have to take baby steps to understand world that Shinsekai Yori is set in, so it was a natural choice that our worldview is built side-by-side with the main characters as they grow and begin to understand the reality they live in - and the questions the anime poses about what it means to be human, how it feels to love, lose and live on, and how to best organize society are just as applicable to us in the present as they are important to the characters. We watch the main cast of group one through the innocence of their idyllic childhood, the drama of their teenage years and their development into adults who still bear the marks of their youth but still soldier on. I feel blessed that this anime (and the novel which preceded it) was made, and that I had the chance to watch it and talk about it over the internet. To any of you who are doubting the veracity of this anime, don't. This is a masterpiece that has left me with many questions, and a lingering sense of hope. A feeling so rare that I'm here writing my first anime review.
