Elements of magic. Easy going home life depicted that warms the soul. It isnt similar in that the main characters in Flying Witch aren't necessarily coming from a rough background. But the main character is going to stay at a relative's place, finding shelter on her journey. How it's mainly similar is how the elements of magic and spirits of nature are presented in a matter of fact & realistic form. ALso; flying witch has a clean cut, yet intuitive and high quality plot episode to episode, similar to the well told story of Mayoiga

the two stories are murder investigative shows that showcase a man / woman partnership with hints of affection. the roles are reversed. the man lead in yakumo is similar to the woman lead in beautiful bones. i'd say the character development isn't as refined in yakumo. but yakumo has a deep paranormal feel going for it, which makes it novel from just investigating dead corpses found. what makes yakumo novel from other paranormal anime is that; the way that the lead frames his perspective on ghosts and leftover energies of the dead - is quite realistic . it's tangible. it feels as if that's really how it works in real life, and that they drew on real knowledge / seers from the past to make this anime. in that regard, it compares quite well to beautiful bones' in-depth portrayal of the science of death, bones, and what corpses have to say about what happened during death. both anime have a lot to teach about their respective niche, and in novel ways, with the leads dropping knowledge on the supporting characters the whole time, teaching what they know, and in ways that engage you and get you applying the knowledge because it is presented to tangibly. How wonderful.
