THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS
If you haven't seen it, then you've probably heard about this show because of its ending. Is the show worth watching just for the ending? Not really.
Story:
I think the story being told here is pretty simple. Makoto is a selfish asshole who keeps bedding girls and cheating on them until (the aforementioned spoilers have arrived) he gets his ass handed to him for it. The problem is that the show isn't very engaging with its story. The first episode fails at hooking you into it, and then the show kinda drags a bit on Makoto's crush on Kotonoha, until eventually he
...
screws around with the other girl, and finally he's boning all the girls at his school. This sounds like very little but it's stretched out to 12 episodes, and it gets pretty dull with a lot of unnecessary filler.
Art:
I'm no artist, but this has to be on the lower quality side of things.
Sound:
The acting was fine and the music was meh. Nothing special.
Characters:
A lot of people complain about the characters. Specifically 2 things: 1. Makoto being unlikeable and 2. the characters being stupid.
1. Makoto is supposed to be unlikeable. I think we've all gotten too used to the idea that the protagonist needs to be likable or sympathetic for a good story to be told. I think this is a wrong way to look at things. If we consider classics like Crime and Punishment, we can see that this assessment is incorrect. This book is seen as a masterpiece and yet its protagonist is quite the scumbag. The book isn't hated because it uses the protagonist's unsavory characteristics to tell its story. School Days does the same, the story is pushed forward by Makoto's selfish nature. I especially like the idea that Makoto doesn't understand relationships and is only in them for the thrill. The problem is that both of these stories are really boring.
2. I agree, the characters are pretty stupid and unrealistic. lol
Enjoyment:
The ending was interesting, but to be honest I'd be lying if I said the show as a whole was entirely enjoyable. Its pretty boring a lot of the time. The show never really hooked me and the only reason I kept going was the promise of a controversial ending.
I think a story like this could be interesting, but it needs to make up for its unlikeable protagonist by hooking you in another way. The art can be pretty low quality at times and the pacing kills any tension the show is going for until the last 2 episodes.
I wouldn't recommend this show unless you're patient and willing to accept that the only reason to watch this is the ending.
