Gurren Lagann is what shonen should be, in a mere 27 episodes, it carried out its plot perfectly, the sheer epicness of this show could not be put into words, and it is truely as good as the internet insists. The story follows Kamina and Simon as they break out of their underground village seeking to reclaim the land back for humanity, it was here that i was truely engrossed into this wild ride of a show, a show that exeeded my wildest expectations, a show that drilled an unfillable hole in my heart, a show named tengen toppa gurren lagann.

this review, just as many did before me, to shower this 27 episode series with even more praise. This series just does so many things right. In todays animes, shows often focuses on realism, relatability and more, this show completly blows the standerd norm away, with its over exaggerated fights, powerups and scenes, but the exaggerated here is the GOOD kind of exaggerated. While many of the aclaimed modern classics have impressive story writing, stunning art and animations and character development, I dont believe that any of those shows would live as rent free in my mind as Gurren Lagann will the emotional scenes, character development, epic scenes and the sheer joy this anime brought me in this stale life.
im sure many of you realized already that im not a very good writer, and im just writing this in an attempt to fill the emptiness in my heart after watching this show, and im certain that many who decided to watch Gurren Lagann came here to find someone to relate to, or someone who felt the same way you did about this show.
i cannot put into words how great the cast of characters in this show is, ill give some honorable mentions later on but ill be focusing on kamina and yoko, simon here because i believe those three what truely carried this show for me. and from here on out ill start mentioning some spoilers so beware. Starting with Kamina, no doubt one of the most manly and cool characters in the show with few of the most memorable quotes, acting as the main mentor of the show, pushing Simon forward, but his vulnerability was also what i liked about him as a character, while on the surface he seems to be invincible and cocky, he reveals that all while he keeps telling simon to belive in him who believes in simon, it was he who was constantly bailed out and fueled by simon, just one of the overall most badass characters ever. Moving on to Yoko, my best girl of the series. Through the series, yoko had been there to support the main duo, and after Kamina died, her attitude changed a lot, suddenly just abandoning simon for no reason at all while hes just a kid? i thought that was ridiculous but i understand that she also had her own feelings to deal with after losing kamina, but she had one hell of a redemption arc, with her clearing up things with simon and especially with Kittan, that last kiss from kittan really elevated yoko's character for me, even though she didn't like kittan, she still embraced kittan and understood him, giving him his last epic send of, truly "You Only Kiss Once", overall, i just thought yoko was a really good character, but i felt like the TV scene at the end with him and kamina could have been longer. Finally the centerpiece of this anime, Simons. From the depths of the earth to the edge of the universe, from the cowardly kid who has to be motivated by Kamina to the Man who motivates others in the face of hopelessness, i wholeheartly believe that the character writing for Simon could not have been done any better. I realize that this section is getting very dragged out, so ill mention a few moments in simon's development that truely made me fall in love with his character. The first is the scene where Simon breaks out of his shell and accepts the fact that Kamina is dead, this scene was super powerful, with the music too, "Just who the hell do you think I am? I'm Simon. I'm not my bro. I'm ME! Simon The Digger!!" truly stuck in my heart. Next is the sunset scene with yoko, where Yoko tells simon that she had a thing with Kamina, and Simon accepts that fact and move on, it was the moment he became a man, where he becomes my favorate character, and im sure this scene moved many fans of TTGL, not just me. While Simon had many more epic scenes, i believe these two truely highlighted his transition.
(conlcusion for people who dont want to read)
I know this review was very messy and dragged out, so ill start talking with my heart instead of my brain here, which i find very fitting. The show doesn't exactly have the best plot ever or the highest quality animations, but it moved my heart the most. The cast of characters, voice acting, the development, the deaths, the moments, and even the most ridiculous of powerups. I fell in love with everything. The show portrays a larger than life message, to not waver, to believe in others that believe in you, like Kamina said "Just don't be distracted by the what-ifs, should-haves, and if-onlys. The one thing you choose yourself - that is the truth of your universe."
This show show is about pushing forward, no matter fast or slow, forward, infinatly spiraling up, like a drill, like Simon, Like Gurren Lagann
characters: 10/10
story: 10/10
art:10/10
ill come back once i feel nostalgic or i want to write more
