This is definitely Kawajiri's best animated movie for me. The animation of this movie was phenomenal for its time. It has an unbelievably intricate and detailed art, that Kawajiri started to develop from his earlier work to then. Kawajiri's other 2000 film Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust might be even further detailed in animation art than this one but Ninja Scroll's story is better. The development of the movie until the ending climax is really great in building the bond between the main characters, which was much better than what happened in Wicked City for me.

This OVA is my favorite Kawajiri Yoshiaki work, and I adore everything about it.
First, the world building of the "Cyber City" is very interesting starting from the police system to the space station technology and kinds of crimes shown. I think it is a not too far-fetched cyberpunk anime, that usefully incorporated possible technology into its story (of course I wouldn't say its realistic but instead with a tasteful dose of romance). Second, the characters are very polished and have a deep history that is very lightly shown in references from the past to their reason to having sentences. Which makes me super curious yet ... I first found out about this manga from its Volume 9 PV on Youtube and I liked the vibe so I read it up to Chapter 79 currently, and I'm very much enjoying the ride. ^^
It's not your peticular Shonen Jump material, the start was kinda hard to grasp cuz it just happens and your like what? just like that, but you get used to the mood of the manga as the story goes. I think the expressions and personality of the characters are very satirical and bizarre with no other undertones implied and I like that. This manga has no mercy towards it characters ... |
