Umi ga Kikoeru is not your typical Ghibli film. The premise is very straightforward and its characters might rub you the wrong way. I believe that is what has thrown a lot of people off. But not enough people realize and appreciate the simplicity of this movie. Compared to romance you see in anime nowadays, in this movie we aren't forced down our throat what each character is feeling at every twist and turn. There aren't any crazy explosions and bgm that cue when the moment is just right. That is this film's charm. It perfectly captures the awkwardness of being an adolescent in love.

I'm really starting to get grasp on how generic Solo Leveling is...
The plot is very intriguing. The synopsis alone is one that tickles my guilty pleasure for badass fight scenes, character development, and world building. I'm a sucker for weak MCs turned heroes so I was hoping this anime was for me. If you take a closer look at Solo Leveling, there's not much effort being afforded to anything else besides visually appealing characters and flashy battle scenes. Behind all of that, it's just your typical isekai. This is the type of anime that I can "turn off my brain" to while watching. I can already ...

Oyasumi Punpun is a cautionary tale about a boy steadily depressing into the abyss that is adulthood.
The story's mundane premise brings to light a sense of relatability to its viewers. We aren't perfect nor do we make the best decisions. And more often than not, we stumble and sometimes astray from our paths. Our protagonist, Punpun, shows us exactly that. The ending does not present a hero's welcome. There are no redeeming actions taken or lessons learned in the conclusion. The audience is left staring into a void of what-ifs. That's the magic of this story. I had high hopes for this anime considering its ratings. I mean, if this show has ratings that high there should be a uniqueness to the show that makes it stand out, right? Sadly, no. It's just your typical "cute anime girls doing badass things".
