I will be straight out with this, you will either think Kuzu no Honkai is the most accurate story to ever surface, or you will hate it. If you have ever been through anything like a break up, especially recently this anime will drown your sorrows, and make you blame your love for being a narcissist.
The show is based around two high school students who love their teachers. They use the other as ways to vent, and to try to mask their loneliness to the outside world and to themselves. The motif of this specific topic runs deep. Actually, it
...
runs through every main character in the show, if you watch everyone is striving to either find love, or prove themselves to the outer world and make themselves desired.
Scum's Wish is heart breaking, if you dive into this story like I did, you begin to believe that everyone has traits like Akane. I honestly believed that the girl I fell in love with was just a whore, even though I was rejected and given closure.
In the show one of the biggest motifs include closure. The show creates the principal that to move forward, you have to accept your past. An obvious example is Mugi, he had to move on from Akane, and Hanabi, because he wanted to find true love. Mugi was stuck in place until he got closure from akane, which really happened when Mugi noticed that he loved the Akane that used people, which showed how deep his love was, he accepted every flaw of hers and proceeded to love her.
Mugi's movement as a character towards finding real love didn't even finish then. He had to get closure from Hanabi, and the high school boy had to give Hanabi closure. Personally, I believe this showed how much Mugi cared, but he did not even know.
(I will say this is more like a personal memoir about how the show connected to my love life and how much I got out of it, so this obviously sounds biased but I think you have to hear me out this show got me out of a hole i was in for six months, so i'm trying to show my gratitude)
The last, and biggest motif in this anime is THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PHYSICAL LOVE and EMOTIONAL LOVE. Two characters really clash in this regard. Akane, and Hanabi are seemingly opposites, Akane was looking for sex, and to get laid, while Hanabi was looking for real love, but to fill the void of failure she used physical love to make herself feel better, especially with Mugi in the beginning of the story.
Lets talk characters!
My favorite character in this story is Akane, surprisingly. She really glues together the whole show, especially referring to the relationship aspect of the show. However, she acted as a comparison in this show, and gave the viewer perspective. She shows the rising level of narcissism in the characters, and shows how selfless some characters are.
Mugi, in my opinion is the most tragic character arc in this story. He took so many hits it seemed unbearable. He was given closure, but in the wrong way. Akane didn't find love, she changed and found love. Mugi did not understand until then, but he enjoyed being played with, and being used. This is a direct opposite to the beginning of his relationship with Hanabi, they were using each other. Funny, the beginning he was using, and the end he was being used. This showed how his levels of narcissism decreased throughout the story (it might seem inaccurate but that is my opinion).
The story would have been simple, if everyone understood their own emotions, and that is what I really took out of this story. It is impossible to know what you actually desire.
Overall, I believe this story is really incredible, and its themes run deep. This show was thought out, on an insane level, the staff were meticulous in creating a show that felt real. This show really shows that some people have hidden desires, and they aren't always trying to help.
