Preface
Mekakucity Actors comes as a part of Kagerou Project, which is literally translated to English as "Heat Haze Project". Well the said thing happens during the hot days of August so this is the origin of the title. The whole project contains anime and both ongoing manga and light novel, while the entire idea is based on a series of Vocaloid songs that can be heard multiple times in the show. How the whole thing turned out to be? Let's find it out!
Setting - both characters and plot
The interesting thing about the show is the setting. The story revolves around 2 days of August
...
and shows us every possible point of view of the characters. How the past events made the present times. It kind of reminded me of the 2008 movie "Vantage Point" where with every episode, the greater story was unveiled. That seems interesting, so why wouldn't I give it a try?
However after seeing the entire show, I've got to admit - I was tired. I've seen this, but I couldn't really understand what actually happened. The group of 9 teenagers (who act as what could be so called "the main cast") is brought together as they have one person who unites them. Among them we can witness the great spectrum of different personalities, which makes them somehow unique. To make this show more lively, the creators decided to add this "supernatural" genre and the group named Mekakushi Dan (Blindfold Organization) has powers involving their eyes. Of course, every character has unique power determined by their features. So for example - the very shy one can easily disappear from the eye of the public, while the popular one can attract the gathering.
Most of the viewers are complaining that character in the shows are underdeveloped. Well it mostly happens when the creators are trying to expand the plot in the anime as much as it is possible without any focus on characters' back story. However this anime is way different. Here we are served a solid portion of characters' past but we can't really see the actual plot. Every episode tells us mostly the past of an individual character, but later on when everything is meant to be explained and anime is supposed to kick off, then comes another disappointment, because the ending... it's really rushed. I couldn't really understand what just happened and why, as the entire show started as quite interesting, maybe even a little bit dramatic and ended out just plain and that's the main accusation when I read anything about the show. The incoherence was the last straw.
As I said before each member of the group was meant to be unique, to have different background, past, motivations... and color. Yes it may seem weird but every character has designated unique color. But well, it is good when the characters are likeable, and the viewer can understand their actions and way of thinking. In that case, I can't really say that, because most of them are sometimes really hard to follow.
Art
I found the animation in the show unique. I've never seen that style before and I must say, it was refreshing. It gives the viewer very minimalistic vibe. Only the characters are drawn in detailed way, while the whole surrounding such as buildings or the crowd are really irrelevant. It's also important to mention that every character seems to have designated a specific "theme" color. It may be a good thing if the creators wanted us to pay the whole attention to the main cast. On the other hand it may indicate some sort of laziness or low budget, especially for those who enjoy a very good and detailed animation. To those viewers the art might be left insatiable.
Sound
As I've mentioned before, the whole project was based on Vocaloid songs and we can hear them in the show. I can't say that I've loved the entire soundtrack, however there are three songs that I really admire and listen to them very often. Those are - the opening, the ending and "Lost time memory". The last one is probably my favorite because of this interesting j-rock sound. What is more interesting, that in every episode of the show, there's some sort of music video attached to the played song and it somehow tries to explain the ongoing events in the anime. It was really unique thing to do and I found it rather amusing.
Summary
So it can be an example of the anime that had the potential but wasted it. I can't really say if there was something that creators wanted us to remember from the show, like the famous quote, or moral. I didn't feel like my life has been affected at all. The show didn't make me really think about it. I only said to myself one thing "well... that's it?". From what I've heard, the anime is a complete disaster and cannot be understood well without listening to the entire vocaloid soundtrack, reading both manga and light novel and having extra support from wikia. I would say that the best thing I got from the show was the soundtrack. Would I recommend this show? No, unless you really have nothing better to do.
Thanks for reading. Feedback will be appreciated and feel free to leave me a message.
