With this being my first review, so please go easy on me, and this will be covering both season one and two of Honey and Clover. Being a college student, it’s a nice change of pace watching an anime about college kids as opposed to the usual, yet enjoyable, high school stories. At some point everyone will reach the point where they sit down and ask themselves, “Just what do I want to do with my life.” Honey and Clover follows the life of 6 college students and 1 university professor. This anime deals with a lot of realistic issues such as graduation, finding a

job, path to adulthood, integration into society, relationships, and money.
Let’s start off with the story; the story can be a little slow at time but it’s all about character development. As stated before it deals with more of realism as opposed to happy anime fun time, not that that’s a bad thing. The story of college students dealing with graduation, making friends for life, dealing with their families, venturing off into the world of adulthood, and the ongoing shenanigans of a genius pretty much sums up what to expect from the story. I can’t really type much else without giving major spoilers.
Moving onto the characters; I can go on and on about the characters but I’ll try to keep it brief. If there is one thing everyone can agree on is that, but first and foremost MORITA is currently one of my favorite characters ever. All of the characters complement each other well and help in the development of the story. My current rating for characters is an 8; it would be a 10 except for the fact that there is one little girl whom I completely detested. A certain 7 year old looking college student was the only character who didn’t make any progress in developing as a human being. Granted her presence contributed to the story, but as a character herself she showed little to no development. She is an 18 year old in a 7 year old body with the mind of a shy 5 year old. I can tolerate a loli here and there, but Hagu is just too much. Everyone else really evolved over the course of the story, and Morita-san was hilarious, loveable, and just plain awesome. I wish I could meet some like Morita san in real life.
The artwork in this anime was so so, but I will say this, the background was really well done and the character design was above average. The sound can get a little annoying at times since they have a lot of scenes where the characters just walk around doing something while some sad Japanese song plays in the background. Actually if memory serves it happens in almost every episode.
Overall Honey and Clover was a very enjoyable anime, and it really made me think about my future. At one point or another we all are going to have to make the decisions these fine young men and woman and hagu half to make regarding our futures. Hopefully for us it won’t have to deal with most of the drama though.
Ending thoughts: Morita-san = awesome, Hagu = horrible character, and real world = sucks
