10/10 - Anime
I'm going to keep this one short since everyone here has an essay it seems on this anime. Watching this when I was 12 years old on cable I was intrigued only by the Mecha that was showed and the cool fight scenes since I was born in the Gundam Seed Era.
Rewatching this series about 3 times over, I must say it is my favourite series for a number of reasons. The mecha is obviously just a front for the themes of post-adolescence, overthrowing the government and hopeless romanticism. The reason why most people love this series is the relationship between
...
the main characters Renton and Eureka. It is a very typical tale of romance weaved between 50 episodes of constant action, plot, and very little fillers - but when the fillers are fillers they are always enjoyable (soccer episode) and make you fall in love with the characters to an even further extent. The boy is Renton, the hopeless romantic whom is desperately in love with Eureka (the girl) from the first episode of the series. He goes through what many guys go through - being in the friend zone, not knowing if he should hold her hand, and general awkwardness. Eureka on the another hand, is a archetypal Rei Ayanami, short blue hair, pale skin, red/purple eyes, who is cold and somewhat emotionless in the beginning for the series, unaware of Renton's unrequited love. Through character development of Renton's mental psychological transformation from boy to man "You're gonna carry that weight" he is constantly looked down upon from his higher-uppers and feels the need to always be better at piloting his mecha to save the world (this isn't as cheesy as it sounds).
On top of all of this, the secondary romances between the crew of Gekkostate and the soundtrack are very, very good - it basically made me fall in love with Japanese music.
In the end, if you're looking for an anime that is cute and lovey-dovey tinted with unrequited love (but finally gets the girl in the end of course) and also is filled with great action scenes (pink clouds of explosions inspired by GS/GSD) then this is for you. Imagine a Code Geass, but much much better without the cocky Lelouch and a love story, and better animations and actual comedy - yes I went there Code Geass fans. In general this anime probably takes features from all the greatest genres and puts them into something unforgettable, and worth rewatching every summer. The Summer of Love.
