Simply put, this anime is great. It has plot twists and continually innovates each part of the story with no 2 pieces being similar in methodolgy or solution. If I were to rate anime on a ranking scale with Death Note and Noein ranking 10 / 10 then Kaiji would rank 9 / 10. It is what I call an epic rated anime.
It can be counted in the same genre as Death Note as a psychological thriller anime. The only downside of this anime is that some people don't like the art style even though it is quite well done.
