Both feature the early introduction of a professional whose hard and unforgiving training regime begins with a task which they exspect the protaginist never overcome. Both begin their journey with the protaginist taking home a recording of past competetions which enthralls them. Both come from a family with a single parent that struggles to make ends meet. Both begin to compete in the sport in a competition setting reasonably early on in the series.
