5cm per second had a considerable reputation as a heartrending film about a story of love. What I stumbled upon was a work of art that was nothing more.
The character movements were fluid and the backgrounds were beautiful. The art was very much grounded in reality, but also presented in such a way that it supported the moods, underlying themes, and perhaps even the thoughts of the characters. I found the art to be excellent.
The music was very nice as well. It was nothing revolutionary, but did everything that i needed to do, supplementing the scenes as they came, and sneaking into the back of

your head, pulling the right strings at the right time.
This is just about the only unbiased thing I have to say about this movie. If you are hoping to read an objective analysis, i would suggest that you look to some of the more positive reviews.
I will keep my main point concise: The characters had close to 15 years to live out their lives, being influenced by a plethora of things. During this time, they grew, changed, and learned many different things. I, as a watcher, was given 1 hour to catch up with and try to understand said characters. They felt like strangers, people I had nothing to do with. And yet the whole time, they were trying to forcefully shove some "beautiful message" down my throat. I just didn't realize it until the ending.
It was just a sad story I heard from someone else about some tragic starcrossed lovers and nothing more. I was told just enough about them to feel terrible when things didn't work out, but I never got to find out what made them happy in the end.
It is an incomplete story, perhaps only because of the tragic ending. It is a tragic story, perhaps only because it is incomplete.
If you like tragic endings with confusing lessons, go watch the news.
Don't watch this movie, because it isn't a movie so much as it is just a story about someone you never knew, you don't know, and you never will know.
You may call me a heartless bastard, but my jimmies are only this rustled because I was too emotionally invested in the characters from the start.
