Ore wo dare da to omotte yagaru?
I have watched a lot of stuff in my life, some of them good some of them not, some overhyped some not. There's always something to learn and a message to be analyzed and understood and perhaps even put it to good use in your daily life. This is, not so much a review as it is a personal story.
When I first was told about Gurren Lagann I didn't think it'd be anywhere near as good as any sol, drama, comedy, etc. anime I had already seen so I was extremely skeptical about what GL had in it that
...
so many people hyped it as hard and high on the pedestal it's oftenly put up. I mean, mechas, a kid, boobs, action, it can't possible be anything near as moving and satisfying emotion wise. We have seen so many action/mecha animes that this can't be something interesting.
To be completely honest and give you a sense of how wrong I was, I started watching it on a Monday after work and university at 21:00 and finished it on Wednesday in the middle of the office at 17:00. The only thing that I have so hardcorely binge watched is Love Live!, which I think it sill is the best thing ever, but barely a hair's width of losing to GL.
Do not let the images fool you, this is not your common anime. Yes it has mechas, yes it has random tiddies, yes it has ridiculous action scenes, yes it seems cliche. It has everything you'd expect out of your typical shounen, but it goes way more deep and beyond the barriers of what shounen offers to people. This is the anime that turns boys into men so much as the bar mitzvah is for jewish people.
It's the story of a boy looking to become a man, looking for his own destiny and fighting his way through life and all that comes with it. It's a story about strength, about perseverance and hardwork, about not giving up your dreams and never give in to any situation no matter how hard and thick the wall between you and your destiny is. Gurren Lagann is the perfect anime for newcomers as well as veterans in anime. All characters have their own story and purpose, all characters have a personality and something to share. Everything in the anime happens for a reason and it's all for the ultimate goal of getting the message across "your destiny is in your hands, become a man, decide for yourself and never let anything or anyone tell you otherwise". It sounds cliche and overused, but in all honesty, this is the only the second anime that has managed to get that message across to my head (the first being LL!).
The experience that Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is can't be described further in words, it's one of those things that's like "see it for yourself and you'll understand exactly what I'm talking about".

(Currently at ep 66)
Ever since I watched Love Live! and K-On! I needed something cute, relaxing, fun and music filled to watch that I could watch at the end of the day to unplug from work, university and everyday life. To be honest I wanted to see more Idol stuff, as I'm now stuck in Idol Hell forever and I don't plan on getting out. I then AKB0048 thinking it was going to be another cute anime albeit in a futuristic setting, and boy I was wrong and I got them feels out of it, but still I needed something to let off some steam.
I
...
then crossed Aikatsu. "Watashi no atsui aidoru katsudou, Aikatsu! hajimarimasu!". Boy, I can't begin to tell you how stupidly kawaii it felt after watching the main character telling me every chapter "you need to relax? here, aikatsu's gonna start". When I started watching it I thought "it's gonna be great to watch it for fun". Then, I think about 4 days after I started I was already into part 2 of the first season and I couldn't let go.
The story of Aikatsu follows Hoshimiya Ichigo on her journey to become an Idol and be the best at it with her lifelong friend Kiriya Aoi. They both enter Starlight Academy with hopes of being the best in everything they try. Each episode has its own story and adventure that you can't wait to see. That is the whole premise of the show, until you realize there's something more hidden behind the story, which is a message of hard work, have fun doing what you like, never give up, and if you fail just smile and keep moving forward. On top of that, after each episode you get an "Aikatsu! Aphorism" which might seem dull and gimmicky, but when you think about it, you can really put some of them to use (one of my favorites is from one of the latest I saw which said "Start your new year running!")
As for the artistic side, the use of a HUGE bright colors palette really puts you in the mood of feeling happy, relaxed, fun and wanting to dance and sing along. Each character has its own colors and can easily be recognized. The only flaw this anime has is its 3D side. The first 15 or so episodes have one of THE WORST 3D animations possible, but if you bear with it, you actually get to see it evolve and become one of THE BEST 3D animations. It really shows its evolution through the episodes and right now, what I see in the 3Ds is almost on par with AKB0048 in all honesty.
The musical side of the show is its best part and its greatest strength. Although I am a huge fan of Love Live music, most of it tends to be cutesy, mostly jpop oriented and not easily listenable by people outside of Japan. What Aikatsu does is something beyond what I could imagine. The blend of genres Aikatsu has on its show is something incredible. You got the j-poppy Idol Activity, but the more western pop oriented sound of the Signalize opening. Then you get the old shcool poppy sound of the ending Calendar Girl. There's an episode that even dares to try with Gothic Rock/metal with the song Glass Doll, which, as a huge metal fan myself, found reallly well composed.
As for the characters, they're all unique, with its own ambitions, strengths and weaknesses. Its as well one of the animes greatest strengths, as it follows each story carefully and what being an Idol means to every character (Ichigo best girl, but Otome (oh my god those Love you!s) comes in a close second with Seira (from the second season)). Each one of them has its own art and personality that blend together so good.
All in all, Aikatsu!, although aimed mostly at a much younger audience than myself (I think its aimed towards <13 girls) it has given me a lot of joy and happiness watching it, everything about it so good and cheerful that I can't get enough of it.

(TL;DR version at the bottom)
We've all had THAT group of friends when we were young and thought we could do anything. We dreamt of things that seem nearly impossible today, but seemed like a walk in the park when we were young. We were superheroes, we were musicians, we were gods among men.
AnoHana deals with a group of friends that used to be the closest ever, but a tragic accident during their childhood got their friend Menma to pass away. Many years later, during summer the ghost of Menma presents itself in front of Jintan to ask him to grant her her final wish, but
...
not knowing what it was. After all these years, Jintan and all the group don't talk to each other anymore, things went downhill since the passing of Menma and everyone has their own regrets and guilt out of her death that they can't seem to let go. Menma asks Jintan to get the whole gang together to make her final wish come true, but things obviously are not the same.
The story has something bigger to itself to teach to all viewers that'll develop itself through the duration of the anime. It'll pull all the strings from your heart up until the very last moment. A story that has each character to rethink about themselves and what they are right now ever since Menma passed away. A story that has each character let go of their emotions and leave their regrets behind them and be honest with themselves and those that surround them. A story that ends with two simple, yet valuable lessons and feelings, let go of your regrets and value your friends, and above all, time and honesty heals people.
The music itself all throughout the anime helps make each scene get the attention needed, whether it is a funny scene or an emotional one. So does de animation. It's excelent, completely realistic without any kind of unrealistic looking animation or artistic direction.
While the story is the engine of the anime, the characters are the wheels. Although short (11 eps), all characters get their own development of their own backstorys and what their regrets and guilts are since Menma passed away. Each character is distinguishable, each having their own personalty and attitude towards life which maybe you'll find yourself relating to one or more of them.
Overall, I found this anime an experience that happens once in a lifetime, you'll only watch AnoHana once for the first time and I still haven't gotten myself to watch it again due to how hard it hits right in the feels and what it tells us about life and friendship. It's about dealing with the loss of a loved one, of someone that gave you hope and happiness. It's a tough pill to swallow once, let alone twice, but that's the beauty of AnoHana, it has something to teach you and will stick with you forever.
TL;DR
A group of friends has been separated for a long time due to the passing of Menma. Menma presents herself as a ghost in front of Jintan and asks him to grant her her final wish which she doesn't remember but involves everyone of the group of friends that used to be so close, but things have changed for the worse between all of them and their relationship won't be the same. A story of friendship, dealing with loss, acceptance, love and above all, life itself. A once in a lifetime experience that can't be forgotten.

(TL;DR version at the bottom)
You die.
Something you did in your time alive is still undone, whether it is finishing university or having built a house and you end up in the middle ground beween heaven and hell without any clue on why you're there and how to get out. To make it worse, you can't die, but you can steel feel.
This is the premise of Angel Beats!. Otonashi ends up in this purgatory of sorts without remembering who he is, what happened to him and what he's doing there. He enters this world where people who reject their dead status are fighting against an angel
...
that gives them no rest at all and wants to make them traverse this afterlife into reincarnation. What follows this premise is a story filled with feels, all of them. You'll laugh when the jokes come in, you'll be angry when things aren't going as planned, you'll cry when the feels hit, and towards the last episodes you'll melt into tears while your heart is getting hit in the floor by a sledgehammer of feels so big you can't do anything about it.
The artistic direction of this anime is a bit different to what you'd expect from Jun Maeda, characters don't seem that much unrealistically drawn like Kanon or Clannad (you know, them huge eyes) and all the action scenes and effects are impressive. Not much to say, it's perfect for the ambient of the anime.
As for music goes, it's only flaw is that it tends to reuse songs for certain moments of drama/comedy/whatever the situation, but the rest is beautiful. Probably the best and most emotional OP of all time has its place in this anime. My soul, your beats! gets to me each time I listen to it because once you finish the anime you'll understand the meaning of the lyrics.
Finally, characters. This anime is at the same place Clannad and Clannad AS is in terms of character development and unique personalities. Each character has its own backstory on this world and their time alive. Each character has its own tragic backstory as to why they're rejecting death and they can't let go of the regrets in their time alive, each one of them is so tragic and you don't expect them to come out when you're laughing or just watching some action and you'll get hit in the face with the feels. Maybe you'll relate to them, maybe you'll understand their situation, you'll feel sorry for them, you'll FEEL. FEELS. FEELS. FEELS. ANGEL FEELS! should be the name of this anime.
Overall, there's NO reason you shouldn't watch this anime, it has 13 eps, best op I've heard (tied to K-On!'s ops at least) and after a few eps it'll rip your heart from your chest and put it in front of you as it smashes it repeteadly, each time harder and faster up until the very end. Kind of a spoiler here, so read at your own risk SPOILER: at the final chapter you'll need a big box of tissues, and a big one, and if you're strong enough to endure the credits after the last scene, there's a little something something waiting for you in the after credits scene that might make you cry even harder out of joy/sadness/every feel.
TL;DR
Otonashi wakes up in the purgatory and has to fight against an angel to survive the angel's constant harassment and attacks towards him and his group of friends who reject their death. Each of them with their own backstory on their life before dying and what holds them to the afterlife and can't let go. Where do you go when you die? Where do you go when you die and still have regrets on something you didn't do while being alive? This anime delves in themes of life actions, guilt, regret, pain, love and letting go. One of my all-time favorites because of what it has taught me and what it has changed in me.

Picture yourself being 27 years old, not having a job, getting rejected of every interview you go to and one step closer to having no future whatsoever. It sounds depressing and not something you'd want to get to. But one day, a mysterious man shows up before you and tells you that you could change your life by taking a pill that'll make your body look like it was 10 years younger and you could restart your life and make it something worthy (there is your ReLIFE) all without any cost. Would you take the risk and start it all again?
This is what this story
...
is about. Kaizaki Arata, an unemploted 27 year old man that fails to get any job and make his life stabilize that is jumped by someone working for a company called ReLIFE, which promises Kaizaki to give him a second chance at life. It has its fair share of comedy and drama, with good moments that leave you asking yourself about life and decisions, how to act, what to feel, who to speak to. All characters have their own personality and their very own stories that seem simple, but yet, as simple as they sound they do represent real life personalities from people you might've known in school or know atm in your workplace.
This is a SOL worth watching due to its relatable content to whatever age group you're most close to. Are you a highschool student? Watch it to see what you can do and learn to prevent your life from going downhill. Are you almost 30 or in your mid 20s and still haven't done anything for yourself to be somewhere? Watch it and then have a good look inside you to figure out what you did wrong and start again with your head high and stop living in the past.

(As it will be with all my reviews, TL;DR version at the bottom)
What would happen if by sheer coincidence you were at school on a break and you found a notebook that says "the person whose name is written in this notebook will die"? How will you react to it? Furthermore, if this is real and not a gimmick, what would you do with such power?
Death Note starts with last year at highschool student Light Yagami in this particular scenario, he finds the Death Note and doesn't trust so much that its power is actually real. After trying it on a random criminal at public
...
TV, he is left baffled at the sight of his newly acquired power.
The story focuses on Light using this notebook to create a crime-free world in where his will should be followed by everyone. Those who dare commit a crime against others will be punished by death instantly so as to keep the world a safe and peaceful place to live in. That is, until the mysterious detective only known as L gets into action to stop the madness. Back and forth between Light and L, the story told in this anime is a battle of wits and power, a battle of minds, a war of egos.
The artistic side of this anime still holds up to 2016, although barely, considering it came out 10 years ago. The scenarios presented, though empty and rather dull at times, they all have a meaning to where the story is going to. It's not eye candy by any means, but it's not something forgettable either. Kudos to the guy who created the shinigami designs and their world.
As to what sound goes, it doesn't hold up really well but still it can be beared with. Both ops and eds are what save the day for the anime. Both Nightmare and Maximum The Hormone fit what is presented at both parts of the anime. The ambient music in the anime is a hit or miss. At times it sounds really good ambiented, but at other times, the classical, operatic music played sounds off and is almost a moodkiller, leaving you with sort of a bitter taste.
Now, the greatest part of the whole anime are the characters. There are few animes of those I saw that really get inside of the character and develop it as deep as Death Note does. Each character, from protagonists Light and L, to side characters like Matsuda have their own stories to be told and their characterizations are unique. Each chapter in this anime has one more tiny bit of information on each character and what their purpose is in this situation that is going on in the world.
All in all, it's not the most epic of animes, but it can give a pretty nasty fight to newcomer animes in the drama department. It's a grim story, filled with mystery, religion, karma and power that is not going to let you go so easily.
TL;DR Version:
Light, a highschool student finds a notebook called Death note that assures the user of it that anyone's name whose is written in it will die according to the will of the writer. Light embarks his journey to kill criminals with this notebook to make the world a clean and safe place to live in without fear and pain, but he'll have to fight his way through the mysterious detective L's sight and investigation. A story with elements religion, power, karma and moral that has something to teach.

*THIS IS MY FIRST REVIEW, SO PLEASE BE NICE! :D*
(TL;DR version at the bottom)
I stopped watching anime a long time ago (when death note came out and everyone was fonboying about it everywhere, it made me sick) and I though I wouldn't ever watch anime again. A friend of mine told me a couple of months ago "you don't have the amount of kawaii in your life you really need, kinda like Love live" so I decided to watch it.
I went into it knowing perfectly well that this was an idol anime, mainly aimed to teen audiences and fully aware of what kind of music
...
I should expect. To put things into perspective, if you haven't guessed by my user name I'm mainly a fan of deathcore, hardcore, all genres of metal and hardcore music basically.
I then started the first chapter at around 11pm in the night. What follows is the total actual truth: next day I went to the office where I work at and watched the whole first season as soon as I arrived.
The story is simple, yet gripping, the school is about to close and the only solution seemingly possible is to start a school idol group to bring more students to the school and stop its closure. What is gripping of this plot is all that the girls involved in the group have to endure to get to their prime and make it so they get their name known to others and bring some joy and happiness to people while being happy themselves.
Each song has a meaning in how the plot has developed so far, and each song has its own unique sound and lyrics that all make sense and leave you thinking on what they mean and what they teach you. A total of 28 songs are played across all seasons/movie and you'll remember each and everyone of them, all the lyrics and you'll end up downloading the songs and having them wether on your smartphone or music player of preference and playing them over and over again (they actually have around 60+ songs, not counting the sub-units songs and they're all amazing).
Now, the characters, they all have their own distinct personalities and artistic direction. Their voices and ways of acting all make you love them more and more (fyi, Rin/Honoka best waifus <3). Some songs have a "main" singer for them which is related to what happened in the episode and you'll say "this is honoka's song" or "this is umi's song". All characters have hilarious reactions when the funny moments happen as well as their own emotional responses when the anime goes into feels land.
You never watched an idols/musical anime? Watch this, and none other will match it after doing so. It's not just a story of 9 girls trying to save their school from closing, it's a story about fighting for your dreams, a story about finding hope and strength when all is against you, it's about not letting anything get in your way and pummel through all the bad reputation, naysayers and making your dreams come true. I watched Clannad, Clannad:AS, Kanon, Angel Beats, etc. and as much as they have taught me valuable lessons, nothing comes close to what Love Live has taught me and what it has done to my life and my way of getting through each day. Perseverance, following your dreams, never back down and above all, love life and enjoy every second of it, wether it is doing what you like or fighting against all odds, cause in the end it's all worth it.
TL;DR version:
(watched LLSIP, LLSIP 2nd season and LLSIP Movie)
The music is impeccable, each song sounds different from each other and the dance routines for each of them will make you learn the lyrics in no time even if you don't know any japanese. The characters are all loveable and not one of them feels out of place (Rin-chan/Honoka-chan best waifus!) as they all have their own stories that are developed during the whole anime. A simple yet convincing and gripping story on how fighting against all odds to make your dreams come true can take you to the top and make your life what you always wanted it to be. Truly a masterpiece that makes your heart warm and happy all the time and leaves you with a beautiful life lesson after finishing it. Don't miss it even if you're not used to SOL animes, to tell you the truth I wasn't into them either, and Love Live! got me into them in an instant.
My only complaint: the 3D is kinda shitty at some points.
