The Tank Police are insufferable human garbage and Leona is worst for her contradictory "it's the human thing to do!" spiel, yet the absurdist self awareness (or complete lack thereof) is the formula for entertainment. It asks you to stop thinking, sit back, and enjoy while the characters revel in their vices.
I have to commend the latter half of the OVA in particular, which focus on the recurring "villain" Buaku. His obsession with the past and eventual coming to terms with his own existence seems to have had a great influence on how Shirow approached the philosophies of artificial life in Ghost in the Shell.

The animation staff did an amazing job at breathing life into Kei Toume's characters. I cried at the end of the first episode, hardly believing that the formative manga that helped me through my early 20's had finally reached the big screen.
I wish it hadn't. It's just a... blasphemous mockery of everything that made the manga what it is. They failed to capture the intricacies of the characters, who felt like real people with real issues. I wouldn't even know if they hastily tried to fit the entire slow burn 113 chapters into 12 episodes, I dropped it after episode 6. Just read the manga.

What seems like a tonal shift that strips all identity from Di Gi Charat apart from name alone, is in its truest essence Di Gi Charat at its core. Nothing could be more in character for the swansong of the original series to take a calming 48 minutes of exposition and slice of life to drop a dry punchline. Everything was set up for those last ten seconds, and it speaks volumes about both the series and the viewers. Though we grow older and we may change as people, those memories and experiences we had will always be apart of us.
