I'm going to be honest. I made an account on here purely so I could review this pathetic excuse for an anime, which regrettably I spent my time watching during quarantine.
When I started watching this show, I already knew about the rumors. I knew the general opinion was that the show is trash, but what I didn't know was just how right that was. If you're looking to watch an anime with vampires, angst, and romance - this is not the show for you. Rather, if you're looking for a poorly-executed reverse harem, where the main female character is constantly abused and tortured with no
...
redemption on the vampires' behalf, then you've lucked out.
In terms of characters, this show has it all, and does it terribly. The main character, Yui, is a young, fragile girl who is honestly more of an empty doll than a likeable character. Yui spends her days in the vampire mansion approaching dangerous men, acting shocked when they (as they have stated that they will do) suck her blood, and promptly fainting afterwards. She is not the likeable, strong female lead you may expect to be at the center of a reverse harem. Every attempt (of which I believe there have been 1-2) she makes at escaping, when faced with a single obstacle or threat, she gives up.
That brings us to our other characters - the vampires. The art style is beautiful, save for whatever was going on with Subaru's eye over his bangs, but unfortunately not enough to keep this garbage show afloat. The vampires show absolutely no signs of remorse, guilt, or any humanity at all. I know that may be the trope of vampires, but the allure and excitement of their cliche is that they will put aside their desires for the ones they love. That does not happen in this show. Instead, every vampire brother in the house tortures Yui, sucking her blood relentlessly, and none have any redemption of any kind. It's despicable, and makes me lose the small sliver of hope I had for them as characters. Not once do the vampires feel guilt, or show remorse, even when they see that Yui has fallen weak or shows signs of illness.
And what a great segue into the so-called romance aspects of this show. The only thing close to romance are scenes between Kaito and Yui, but I can't even call them romantic. If anything, he borderline rapes her (if that scene in the church wasn't just outright rape already), and the sadistic/masochistic undertones are poorly executed when all Yui does is blatantly tell the vampires to stop and cry when they ultimately take advantage of her vulnerability.
I haven't even started talking about the plot yet, which is actually quite fitting because there IS none. The little plot the creators do throw in towards the last 2-3 episodes is pathetic, poorly-written, and makes no sense. I finished this season not recalling anything that had happened for the past two hours of content.
Needless to say, I was disappointed, even knowing the disaster I was walking into. My main criticism of this anime is the lack of character development, as it really just makes for a very boring and cringe-worthy watch. If I could rewrite the show, I absolutely would- I think the potential was certainly there, if the creators had wanted to write a reverse-harem about vampires learning to control their needs around this seemingly ordinary human girl who had been sacrificed upon them. So, in conclusion, don't waste your time like I did.
