Story: 9
The basic premise is that Mahiro makes a deal with a powerful Mage that in return for information on the identity of his sister's murderer, he will save the world. The first 12 episodes follow him and his best friend Yoshino as they approach the location of the tree which will end the world.
Some plot twists do exist and I enjoyed those. The flashbacks are also well done with a beautiful sense of nostalgia. But I found the main plot forgettable, eventless, dragged out, and cliche at a few times (-1 point).

Shinsekai Yori is my favorite anime, however underrated, of the season.
Story: 10 The story is the deal breaker for me in this particular anime. Although the first few episodes are lighthearted, the plot soon follows the foreshadowing in the beginning and turns dark. After the first 10 episodes, a huge plot twist happens (I did not see it coming although others may have) and I've heard that there will be more. The only word I can think of for this series is average. The graphics aren't beautiful, the characters don't have much depth, and the plot isn't praiseworthy.
One of the specialities of this anime is the comedy, which I found okay, but not hilarious (unlike Gintama). Although I've seen other reviewers compare this to Gintama in terms of the episodic and comedic moments (the inapropro jokes about balls), the jokes are less natural and more forced and tend to be more repetitive.
