Damn. I have been watching anime for around 15 years. I have never written a review for an anime before but this one made me do it.
I was so hyped before this was released. I heard nothing but praise for the manga so I was excited for more shoujo finally! And with Ishikawa Kaito and Ueda Reina as leads? mmm yes please give it to me
The first few eps aired and I saw how the female lead was very meek and submissive. She had zero personality and can't even think for herself. I was like hey, maybe she'll grow into herself more in
...
the following eps and she'll gain more confidence, like a typical fairy tale, right? lol
The first "arc" ended and I thought she was going to go through a transformation of sorts while she takes her lessons on how to be a better wife (??? wtf even is this). Sadly that was not the case. She lacked sleep due to the nightmares from her "magical talent" and because of this, she couldn't do well in her wifey classes and that just put her into a spiral. There was a time when she seemed to gain some confidence but the show just tore down everything they did to build her character and reverted her back to ep1 Miyo. Good job, show.
What really pushed me to write this review was that scene in ep10 where they were brought in to the Usuba mansion. Imagine three other men talking about your future in front of you and they talk like you're not even in the room. They ignore you and never ask about how you would feel about you living with this family or that. I just felt like they were talking about Miyo like she was their property and they were arguing over who got ownership rights over her. "Kudou Kiyoka, will you relinquish and hand all responsibility of Miyo over to me?" "We have to return what was taken to the place it should have stayed all along." And as Miyo was trying to say something (finally!), Kudou dropped a bomb: "There's absolutely no way I will be handing over Miyo." I facepalmed so hard I exited Netflix. I did not even finish this scene. Maybe Miyo actually did say something and the show actually gave her agency in the end of this episode but with Kudou, who the show is portraying to be your knight in shining armour, who will sweep you off your feet and is the epitome of white knight ikemen, Kudou saying that last line was enough for me. It just disgusted me that the ikemen romantic interest who the show is trying so hard to make you like him would say something like this and just ignore what Miyo was trying to say. It wasn't just a red flag, it was a red alert blaring sirens on full blast. Idk if it's just the translation subs on Netflix or what but the wordings during this scene absolutely objectified Miyo and transformed her into a trophy only one family can parade around.
There were other scenes before this in ep10 that rubbed me the wrong way but this one took the cake, made a bakery and put Marie Antoinette to shame.
Maybe Miyo will have her transformation in 2 more eps just right before the finale? Idk, idc honestly. I'm just sad because we had Ueda Reina, Ishikawa Kaito and Kimura Ryouhei in one anime and it was just not for me :(
Also I want to ask why Kudou's sister got divorced because she couldn't cook and do chores??? Didn't she marry into another wealthy family? One with servants who do the dirty manual labor? I doubt ladies who the show portrays to be proper "wife material" like the evil sister can even brew a pot of tea so I'm just confused???
