Understood. I now have it from a more in-depth fan than I that Astro Boy loosely follows the manga. Since I haven't personally verified that interpretation, I submit it may not--necessarily--be what you're looking for. Much like with the original TV series for Hellsing, it may be considered a completely alternate version of the story and (I would think) not subject to filler considerations. But that's up to you.
Incidentally, "Fist of the North Star" comes to mind. I have a feeling it may not be the first in either instance, but it may be a good springboard as to what to look for. If Astro Boy or another early piece isn't the answer, likely it will be one of the Giant Robot genre.
I think something must be screwy with your settings, as the system says you don't seem to be set-up for receiving messages. :p Here's the reply I was planning to send you:
"It depends on what you mean. Defining what "filler" is, for the purposes of your article, will be important. Do you mean an episode that creates content not in the source material (manga), or are you focusing on the intent: a pointless episode(s) the creators are using to buy time for more meaningful content. If the latter, the issue is a bit more subjective. For example, many people argue an entire plot arc in Bleach is filler because it has nothing to do with the manga content. Some will also argue it was pointless, but that's the subjective part.
I'd have to think about it in either case. I'll get back to you as soon as I have an idea."
