Yu Yu Hakusho is an anime revolving around 14 year old Urameshi Yusuke and his journey with his friends. It is an example of a typical shounen done correctly.
Story- 8
The first 7 episodes or so are very unique, in terms of what happens, but then after than its just your typical shounen anime, however back in the 90s it wasnt really typical. You have 3 tournament arcs and just the typical fighting the villain at the end of every arc. However the way it was done was good and the different characters you meet along the journey are done very well.

What you have
...
to keep in mind that this is a 90s anime, it is more than 20years old, so the animation is of course not going to be as good as current shounen such as Hunter x Hunter, or even Naruto. However even tho its a 90s anime the animation does tend to lack at certian points of the anime reusing the same shots towards the end, however it does indeed get the job done
Sound- 9
All based on personal preferences, you again have to remember its a 90's anime so the type of music they use will be different to what we hear nowadays. I personally loved the sound in this anime, from the Opening to the endings apart from ending 4, how i hated that one. But even the music in the anime was lovely too. I especially fell in love with struggle of sadness, what a lovely piece of music, but as i said before all depends on personal preferences.
Characters- 10
This is what makes Yu Yu Hakusho the amazing anime it is. I shall go through the main characters in depth below, and some of the villains and side characters which i found interesting.
Urameshi Yusuke- The hero of our story. Eventhough the first 10 episodes you might hate him due to his delinquency and aggressiveness, slowly you'll warm up to him as you find more about him and you realise that the aggressive side to him usually shields the warm and gentleness inside him. He easily develops the most out of our main cast, and what a joy it is to see him develop how he does. From a delinquent who couldn't care about anyone and wanted to die, to a character who would face death for his friends to keep them alive. Urameshi Yusuke is easily my favorite shounen protagonist. He is just amazing.
Kuwabara Kazuma- Our main characters goofy best friend. Kuwabara is your typical loud mouth ugly character, however there is more than meets the eye, surprisingly he is also the most compassionate and most kind character out of the 4. Eventhough he is indeed the weakest out of the 4 with no special strength or even power, his will power and tenacity to fight for his friend makes him who he is. And his phrase in sub version of the anime *Yukina Sa'an* will have you laughing for days and will put a smile to your face.
Hiei- Hiei.....If you've watched Hunter x Hunter, i guess you could compare him to Killua, but better i say. Hiei in terms of development he might have the smallest changes but these small changes sum up who Hiei really is. At the beginning he starts of as a villain that mocks humans, however later on the series we realise that he indeed is very protective about the people in his group, and would go to hell for his friend and his sister. Hiei is cold and distant to the group, but the cold and distant thing about him is what makes Hiei such a great character.
Kurama- Kurama is the most intelligent out of the 4 and also the only one to have a dual sort of personality, the normal Kurama and his transofrmed demon version. They both are very different to each other, the normal Kurama is more friendly and mot as bloody lusted, while the demon version is the complete opposite killing anyone who seems to be in the way.
These 4 characters are my favourite bunch of people in anime, all of them are like a pieces of a jigsaw, they all fit each other perfectly. The jokes and relationship with each other is honestly just amazing, and when the anime ended i must have teared up as I knew I wouldn't be part of this friendship group anymore, and it still saddens me that I wont be able to explore more of this group.
Keiko- Yusukes lover, as much as shounen animes dont tend to focus on romance, i have to admit the romance is nicely done. We see them slowly develop into lovers, and its a beautiful thing to see, from our hero having no interest in her to leaving all of his demon side in order to spend the rest of his life with her, shows how much he cares about her. Keiko is indeed a female character which i enjoyed watching. She pushes Yusuke to his limits, and isnt the typical damsel in distress.
Villains, the best thing about these villains is how much they resemble our main hero. If things didnt go as well as they for Yusuke, Yusuke could easily be in our villains position doing the nasty stuff they do, and its a thought that makes you think that you can do anything if you put your head to it. You can prove people wrong , no one knows you as good as you know yourself, its a message which isnt touched at allbut one i've taken with me from this anime.
Yu Yu Hakusho is an amazing anime, i have rewatched this 4 times now. And I still dont get bored of it. I recommend it to all shounen fans, it is an anime which has everything. And I hope people do watch this as they are indeed in for a treat.
