From what I've heard, the first season is based off of Asato Asato's very first novel it is based on, which he or she put in for a writing contest. And it shows. The second season is way more focused, but there is at least one big contrivance that is kind of hard to wrap your head around. In this world of bizarrely vague superpowers, it kind of works by that point, though, and it ties directly into a certain character's growing insanity brought on by PTSD.

Ah well, at least you didn't dislike it. I guess I initially liked it so much because it was the first anime I watched immediately after screaming at the screen every few minutes at every main character's obvious stupidity and blatant hypocrisy or the just plain dumb plot twists in Code Geass. "Wow! An anime with likable characters that handles similar themes more competently? A top-teir, kawaii-as-heck waifu as the lead? 10/10!"

Now the honeymoon mindset is gone and I'm seeing its flaws more clearly. 86 is a darn good character study, but in terms of plot it relies way too much on contrivances. Every main character has some sort of past connection to another? Uh . . . Well, at least I have a reason to be so emotionally invested in them all.

7/10 for me. That's one thing I like about this site so much. It not only aids you in discovering more anime, but your perceptions can be challenged as you meet new people and it helps you become more objective in your ratings.

Season 1 of "86" does have a few huge contrivances but is overall well-written. It really ramps up when the big plot twist is shown in Episode 5. That's just messed up! But so intriguing. . . .

Wait . . . you dropped "86"? Keep going with it. It gets to be really good!

I think the problem is that it was originally intended to be a multimedia franchise, but it was also a cheap, throwaway side project Sunrise was doing as an experimental departure from Gundam. There was no coordination among all of the writers and they just made up their own lore as things went along. (Thanks for killing cult favorite characters so casually, Taniguchi!) It's impossible to understand any of the side characters' motivations unless one would read the material they first appeared in or in which they finally were expanded on later. I don't even think you would know it's an alternate history timeline branching off from the success of the Napoleonic Wars unless you would look it up. That's ultimately what caused it to fail to the point that Sunrise never bothered publishing any R2 novels or many of the manga out of Japanese.

It's pretty much just a lot of cool ideas just mashed together without care, which are ultimately dropped to glorify its awful Power Fantasy protagonist. I'm only keeping my eye on it now because I hope the new writers for Z of the Recapture decide to take a massive dump on the original series. "Lelouch of the Resurrection" may be the pinnacle of Taniguchi flexing over the dangerous amount of power he was given over production. Yeah, thanks for disregarding the lives of your friends, Gino. . . . And are these absurdly obvious plot holes supposed to be a meta commentary on the complacency and gullibility of the Code Geass fandom?

Fantastic Code Geass review. You're way more eloquent than I ever could be. 😅 I need to break my thoughts down into the most basic level to make any sense.

In a word . . . PLOT HOLES. Wait, that's two.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
