Animation:
---------------------------------------------
The animation of a Lull in the Sea, or Nagi no Asukara offers a high level of visual enjoyment. A lot of the animation is fluid providing an excellent example of movement. With that in mind, the show does a good job at highlighting the underwater world of Shioshishio; the home of the characters, Manaka, Hikari, Chisaki, and Kaname. The underwater animation provides the characters with a sense of buoyancy. I believe that this is done better than other anime that have underwater scenes because I find that a lot of animation doesn't take count for buoyancy. With this anime, there's rarely any fast
...
paced animation, not to say there isn't any at all but you will feel the show is lacking in fast paced scenes if you are watching this show for action.
Characters:
---------------------------------------------
Chisaki Hiradaira:
---------------------------------------------
Chisaki's character seems to have the most subtle change. While the show undergoes all of the main characters and their struggles with adolescence, Chisaki's character development stems from natural growth and the feeling of change that's been persistent throughout the show. Out of all the characters, Chisaki is seen as a mother figure. Her personality consists more of nurturing and keeping the rest of the group from harm.
Hikari Sakishima:
---------------------------------------------
Hikari can be seen going through vast changes throughout the show from being a bratty adolescence to someone who's understanding and calm. His character can be seen as the leader of the group of kids from Nami Junior High. Hikari shows a lot of pride for being someone from the sea. He's shown as someone who's quick to start a fight but as the show progresses the character goes through a lot of character development that allows Hikari to mature.
Kaname Isaki:
---------------------------------------------
Kaname's relevance is questionable. His character is a bit overshadowed by the rest of the cast. However he's a gentle character, and although he doesn't say much, his actions prove otherwise. Kaname can be seen more as support for the rest of the characters. He tends to act like he's okay when he's not; in others words, he puts on a smile. He's quiet and reserved at first and a lot of his development doesn't take place until the second season. In the second season, he becomes more hot-headed and jealous and learns to confront his own inner issues.
Manaka Mukaido:
---------------------------------------------
Manaka is a ditsy girl who can be seen as the heart of their group. Without Manaka, the group doesn't feel whole. Manaka is the most optimistic out of all of the characters. She's a nice girl who tends to put others before herself. Often, she's seen just trying to fit in, trying to co-exist with the people on the surface. At some points in the show she can be seen as the main focus. During the series she goes through some character development, but not as much as the other main character Hikari. There is a noticeable amount that allows her to become a developed character.
Tsugumu Kihara:
---------------------------------------------
Tsugumu is a quiet and reserved character who befriends the group from Nami Junior high. He's the grandson of a fisherman and spends a lot of his time out at sea. Tsugumu is very fond of the people of the sea and knows much about them. His character is often seen helping the group in anyway or form when they're in need. His character receives the least character development as he is the quiet and collect type. He tends to only say things that are important. He can be seen as the brain or the hands of the group because he's always thinking ahead.
Miuna Shiodome:
---------------------------------------------
Miuna is seen to be a lot like Manaka. She can be ditsy and often is seen as support for Hikari. She tends to be emotional and loves the whole cast. Miuna is a character who's born from a human and a person from the sea. Her character goes through a large amount of character development over the two seasons.
Sayu Hisanuma Sayu is the best friend of Miuna and is often seen trying to help Miuna in the wrong way. She tends to be a character that becomes easily irritable and can be seen sometimes lashing out because of jealousy.
Story
---------------------------------------------
The story follows four kids from the now closed Nami Junior High in Shioshishio. The plot takes place in the fictional settings of Shioshishio and the surface world. Their school closing forced these kids to go to school on land where they meet a boy by the name of Tsugumu. They're often seen hanging out with one another. For the most part, the story is their day to day lives and learning to balance out life between the sea and land. The pacing of the story is rather slow, but filled with drama for the characters to work out.
Music
---------------------------------------------
The music was overlooked due to the story itself. It intensified the sad, the happy, and the various other emotions like any other anime. It was a bit overshadowed by this fact but it allowed the emotions for the scenes to do their work. The opening and ending themes for both seasons are very calm and collect. It's very mellow and the emotions for the scenes tend to work for each of their respective seasons.
Level of Enjoyment
---------------------------------------------
Although this show requires a bit more patience, it's full of enough memorable moments and likable characters for you to enjoy. It is enjoyable and has its moments but this show is not set up for anyone who enjoys lots of action. That being said if you like characters talking, solving problems, and so forth it's an enjoyable watch. This show is full of drama and romance and it's a good watch for anyone who enjoys those genres. It's a very calming show that requires a lot of patience to enjoy because of how the plot is set up.
