I'm not going to write a long review here. In fact, I've never written a review for an anime before in my life, and I never planned to. But I felt the need to do so for this one. Shinsekai yori deserves it. It's been out for a while and I have never heard of it. I was bored so I decided to anime jump and downloaded about 8 full series of different shows to watch. Little did I know I had luckily come across the anime that would soon top my personal chart.
Story- 10 - Shinsekai yori, is just phenominal. The story is
...
unique and kept me hooked the whole time. I watched the entire show in one sitting and am now writing this review at 3 in the morning because I just can't get it out of my mind. I've seen multiple shows that have played their hand at making a story that bridges multiple years, in this case the story of 5 children all the way to their adulthood, but never has any been so successful at it as Shinsekai yori. The first time they made an age jump I was a little caught off guard but I was able to get back on quickly and other than that it was entirely flawless throughout the entire series.
Art- 10 - I'm generally pretty lenient on art anyways so my opinion is usually pretty easy, but even I caught myself admiring the art at times in this show. While many anime give little effort into the background I found myself just as fascinated by the gorgeous backgrounds and scenery as by the story itself.
Sound- 10 - What can I say, it was perfect. While a large majority of the sound is repeated throughout the anime, it isn't simply because it fits well, it actually has significance in the story and I found the sound itself continuously changing my mood and how I felt about what was happening. Again, I'm not great at reviews or explaining things, but you'll understand when you watch/
Enjoyment-10- There hasn't been a show I've been this attached to in a long time. I've always put Clannad and After Story at the top of my anime list because they simply brought me into the story so well that I was severely depressed for quite a while because of it. While that might sound bad, I think that's what makes an story great. If it can actually make me so attached to the story that I feel like that world is more real for a little while than my actual world then it is truly a great anime. Shinsekai yori did just that. I'll admit, I was beyond attached. I was constantly trying to solve questions that arose throughout the series, I was left in shock, I was angry, happy, irritated. Name and emotion and this anime made me it at one point. Don't get me started on sad though, god my eyes still sting. As an 18 year old male I'm not at all ashamed to say that this show had me bawling my eyes out in the middle of the night and literally covering my face with my hands. Not to spoil anything, but, as any good story goes, there are some sad parts.
Overall, yup, you guessed it, I'm giving it a 10 out of 10. I never even heard of this anime until I was watching it but it is no doubt my favorite anime and I'll recommend it to anyone I know. Regardless of what genre they prefer because I think enjoyment will be largely universal. Although to rehash something I had read elsewhere, it is said that some people drop this anime because of the small amount of yaoi/yuri scenes in it. Which honestly baffled me. I'm not even almost a fan of either but that didn't make me enjoy the show any less. In fact, that unique way this so called Utopian society works is truly intriguing and it does nothing but add more depth and uniqueness to the story. I literally cannot imagine anyone dropping this show once they've started.
