I didn't know what to expect when I started reading Koroshi Ai. Rather, I thought I wouldn't really like it as I don't usually read crime/mystery manga.
I'd say this: curiosity kept me reading for the first few chapters. Before I knew it, I've read through quite a few more and was enjoying it.
That aside, I really don't know what would be considered cliché or overused in such genres yet it still felt rather unique. The story unfolds really smoothly and at a good pace, not to mention the writing style: the elegant flashbacks/rewinds were extremely appealing.

Starts off as some sort of collection of gags about a girl who sees "creepy stuff". So far so good right? Sounds like a plain horror-com that doesn't lead up much to anything, and only gets as amusing as Miko's (our main character) reactions.
Well, not really. I was personally about to drop it after like, 6 chapters because this was exactly what I thought: Plotless. I kept reading and, to keep this spoiler-free, there *is* a plot. Around chapter 10-11, things get pretty *interesting* as there seems to be an actual story and it's building up to something that (seems) to be good. This is all ...

If you're checking the reviews to see whether to give Kuroshitsuji a read, you might as well just go ahead and read it. And you probably don't want to hear it from a (very obvious) fan of the manga, but really, I suggest you ignore the reviews and give it a shot---if you can handle drama with a dark twist and elaborate plot.
