The only thing I knew about this when I went into it was that it's about two people who keep meeting in the rain. That was enough for me. I love the rain, I love the idea/trope of "strangers meeting in the rain", and so I was sold. I'll start off with what I enjoyed about this short film.
* The art-style. Whilst the scenes where it rained were, of course, particularly beautiful, you also get some nice attention to deal. There's some Ghibli magic going on when it comes to food too, it's delightfully drawn.
* Plus, the "camera direction" is really well done. You
...
get some very fluid and interesting shots in this film.
* The music's good, too. I found the addition of the piano to be very welcome, and the voice actors did a decent job.
* Finally, I'm a sucker for just... the general depiction of Japanese day-to-day life, and Kotonoha no Niwa does it well, in my opinion.
Now, for the cons.
* I just didn't care for the characters. They felt very generic, very bland, and they're just not memorable.
* The age-gap. He's 15, she's 27, and a tutor at his school. I appreciate that I'm getting to see an entirely different culture to my own, and different cultures do/see things differently, but for me, that sort of age-gap isn't going to sit well with me.
* Whilst the initial concept interested me, my interest didn't develop further. You could see where things were going, and I would've liked for things to be longer, and more fleshed out, so I could be properly absorbed into and impacted by the plot.
* Plus, kind of spoilery but not really, the "plot twist" where the main guy suddenly seems to have a foot fetish? It threw me, and all I could think of as he went to touch her foot was the "ET phone home" moment where ET's finger is glowing. I struggled to take things seriously after that.
I know I'm in the minority with my opinions, and that's fine. I think I just wanted more.

This anime's somewhat relatable for me. I'm a 23 year old man, who is currently unemployed and also out of education. Though my circumstances/reasons for being in my current situation are entirely different (and valid), I can still relate to the main character a hell of a lot, as well as that desire to just... go back 10 years, make some changes, make more of an impact with what I know now, and have a fresh start.
I really did know nothing going into this. ReLIFE's on the front-page of both MAL and Crunchyroll a lot recently. I saw the genres on MAL as school and
...
slice of life, and so I thought "WHY THE HELL NOT?!" (school/sol anime is my weakness), and decided to watch an episode.
Less than 24 hours later, I had finished the show, and was browsing Tumblr for #relatable posts. Damn. God damn. This shit's good.
The premise, and the way your introduced into the school environment, is certainly unique, and you've got a diverse mix of characters/personalities. You've got some romance, some drama, some day-to-day life problems, as well as teenagers just being teenagers. The best part though (if you ignore the kind of sci-fi magic pill thing) is that it's pretty realistic! The reasons for the drama, and the build-up to potential romance, the way characters introduce themselves... it all feels pretty natural to me, which I really appreciate in an anime.
However, there's also some deeper story-lines and elements that come into play a few episodes in. A couple of serious topics come to light, and are dealt with in (again) a realistic and mature way. After a few episodes, I just thought ReLIFE was going to be some light, fun fluff, with a generic and positive message, but no. These additional elements made quite an impact, and they were incorporated into everything in a mature manner.
The episodes flow together really well, and can be appreciated both individually, and as a whole. I really enjoyed the music, too. There's a good mix of stuff played during the end-credits, plus a jazz-ish vibe throughout the show, thanks to a piano, and yeah.
ReLIFE will leave you wanting more, which in my opinion is a sigh of an A+ anime. Highly recommended!

*this is my first review, so it's probably not going to be the most coherent thing, but I'll give it a go!
For what it's worth, I enjoyed this anime. The only things I knew about it before I began to watch it was that a) gayness, and b) manga. Trust me when I say that it delivered strongly on both of those points!
To start off with, the things that worked: (for me)
- I really enjoyed the environment. It reminds me of GSNK, but on a much larger scale, where there's various processes in manga production, and certain people specialise in certain areas. I dunno, I
...
just found it interesting, and that it created some good moments for the characters.
- It's funny. It's light. It's fluffy. PLUS it's BL, and when all of that combines together... well, I'm just absolute trash for anything like that.
- My final point is that I wasn't expecting the cast of characters. I thought this was going to revolve around one couple's story, both their past and their current situation. This wasn't the case, and the fact that you follow multiple romantic story-lines works really well. It kept things interesting, and it was cool to see how everyone and everything linked together.
...and then, what I didn't like, or at least could've been better:
- Some of these characters creep me out. There, I said it. Despite this being BL and everything, I still got the distinct vibe of gender-roles. This led to half of the characters being very masculine and intimidating, and the other half seeming shy and more flamboyant.
Now, that's not what I have a problem with, for the most part. I mean, it's an over-used character trope, but fine. My issue is when some of the more stereotypically-masculine characters force themselves on their respective love interests. They may be protesting against their advancement, trying to push them off, or in one case literally slapping them, yet they still try to force them into a kiss or something, as if they think "I know what's best for this person, despite what they're saying". It made me uncomfortable, and I was not a fan of this.
- Everything is animated and drawn to a decent and consistent standard. However, there was just never that moment where I though "Holy crap, this is stunning". It's just consistently okay, which is fine, but still. It felt kind of lacking, to me.
- Also, the sound and music is just not memorable. It's very generic, and you can kind of predict what the tone of the music's about to be before it actually starts up in certain scenes.
Anyway. Think that's everything I've got to say. Overall, it was a decent watch, but not a memorable one. I'll probably watch S2 at some point, but I'm in no hurry.
