Self indulgent, slow, sometimes cliched.
Genuine, relatable, beautiful.
Your lie in April was fantastic from beginning to end. Here's why...
STORY
Whilst slowing down in the middle, and sometimes losing focus a little bit, the plot stands out from the competition. Preferring to be a story about people choosing who they want to be rather than just coming-of-age and self discovery, the plot feels fresh. Characters are always well utilised and nothing in the show feels extraneous.
STYLE
Incredibly self indulgent; endless crying, gratuitously long music sections, overly used metaphors. Yet, the whole thing felt so genuine and heartfelt. The characters all feel very real as if all their dialogue was
...
written by people feeling each emotion as they wrote.
Everything was well bundled as well. Metaphors tied in well and lots of subtle touches really added to the experience.
MUSIC
I hope you like piano music. Especially the highbrow stuff.
CHARACTERS
Well designed, relatable, mainly avoiding being wholey archetypal. The diversity in characters really helped the feel of the show and every character seemed to play their part and play it well. Even a character introduced half way through the series taking on a major role came to be well characterised and avoided feeling shoehorned in.
Character arcs felt fleshed out and complete felt for almost all characters. :)
OVERALL: 9/10
Must watch.
(Sorry if I've switched tense a few times. It's pretty late and I can't be bothered to fix it.)
