Death Parade
Story: 9
There is one thing everyone needs to understand when watching Death Parade. It is nothing like Death Billiards, so don't go in expecting it is.
Death Billiards was all about ambiguity, which I didn't like because it was just minimal writing and then everyone would make up theories, which was a waste.
Death Parade has a great story, don't complain that it's episodic because it was always building up to something. The last few episodes were especially good for character development, as you start to see a greater evil.
SPOILERS FROM HERE ON
The unnamed woman is revealed to be named Chiyuki, and was once a figure
...
skater, which has been foreshadowed since episode 5, so you can't say it came from nowhere. Decim has to quickly judge her as she can't spend much time in their tower as human souls slowly start to leave the body. Decim decides to take Chiyuki to her home and tells her if she hits a button she can come back to life with no memories of dying or of Quindecim. Chiyuki contemplates whether she should do it and realizes that she should value everyone's life, and doesn't press the button. The struggle Chiyuki has makes Decim cry due to the fact that he had human emotions inside him. Chiyuki is reincarnated and the show ends with Decim standing, welcoming 2 guests to Quindecim with a dummy of Chiyuki next to him.
The ending was extremely satisfying and answered a lot of questions, it also had a lot of sad moments, especially with Decim and Chiyuki saying goodbye.
My only problem with the story is that it never explained why Chiyuki was able to remember she died.
Art: 8
The art was the weakest part of the show to me, despite the fact that it still was great. It looked good, but some of the facial expression were really uncanny. It's most notable in episode 1, and is good for a while, but still has some strange things here and there.
Sound: 10
The sound was amazing, it gave off a creepy vibe which just added to the amazing atmosphere. The opening had such contrast to the show, with the happy feeling in the opening compared to the less than happy feeling of the show. The ending was great, and gave an intense ending to each episode. My personal favorite is the piece that plays at the end of each episode during the preview of the next episode.
Character: 9
This one will take some explanation.
Decim: At first glance Decim is the run of the mill stoic character, but becomes so much more than that as he starts to understand human emotions with Chiyuki. He develops so much over time and is just such an endearing character.
Chiyuki: The focus of the show, Chiyuki starts as a boring assistant, but it happens to be that she is the reason Decim develops as she realizes that she should still be alive and that she should have valued her life and her loved ones more.
Nona: Blue haired loli... I mean Nona is the boss of the tower. She has a lot of control over everyone, and creates arbiters, including Decim, her experiment of using emotions in arbiters. Nona seems to be a motherly figure for Decim, with characters constantly referring to Decim as Nona's boy.
Ginti and Mayu: The cold hearted arbiter who thinks humans are worthless. He judges for no reason besides the fact that he is supposed to. He gets stuck with Mayu, who he cannot judge. Eventually he sends Mayu to the void, tricking her into think she would be reincarnated with Harada because she sent a person's soul to the void to stop Harada's soul from being lost forever. Ginti decides that is a decision worth sending her to the void for, so Mayu is sent to the void for her greed.
Clavis: The elevator guy and comic relief. He doesn't do much, but he doesn't have to really.
Castra: A woman who manages dead people. She sends souls to arbiters.
Quin: The original owner of Quindecim, alcohol obsessed. She quit her job as an arbiter and began running the Memory Bureau
Enjoyment: 10
The show was a fun ride and I always wanted more. Check it out if you have time one day.
