Let me start by saying that I just watched all three seasons of this back-to-back and that, going in, I had no idea what it was about (except that it had animal-ear girls).
The story starts off in a typical "isekai" flair--the main character Shinku (or something phonetically similar, depending on your translation) is summoned to another world to fight in a war as a Hero. Shinku is an incredible athlete in that he placed second in a Ninja Warrior-esque competition behind his mentor/rival; both of them happen to be in Middle School, by the way. After getting a quick explanation of what is happening, he

heads off to war. Since "war" in this show equates to American Gladiators on an obstacle course (with large armies of people on either team), Shinku is able to quickly excel.
These encounters are a central part of the story, but the underlying plot that connects the battles and the characters are really what makes this show shine. The light-hearted fun of the "wars" later takes on a more serious tone as the story develops, leading to an exciting finale. Even after the dust settles, there are some well portrayed emotional moments that really deepen the characters.
All throughout, there is action, suspense, as well as some drama, and even a bit of romance. The ecchi parts are a bit unnecessary, but add a few comical moments as well. The show succeeds in building an emotional attachment to the characters and their plights. Characters were decently developed well and, in the final episodes, it really showed.
Overall, I'd say this was a really good show. It had an interesting premise, beautiful art and music, and the story and characters were very interesting. The fan-service was sort of pointless, but was fun to watch nevertheless.
