Neon Genesis Evangelion
At its shell, Evangelion is a bad anime with bad pacing and mundane events that are foreshadowed by saturated mecha battles. At its core, however, Evangelion is a message.
It is a message for us, the viewer, the humans. The main problem that Evangelion deals is the problem of human connection and our affection for love. Throughout the series, Shinji tries to find someone who would love him for what he is and in return he would offer his love for them. He doesn’t find it and secludes himself into his own self and escapes in the world of music listening to “Tumbling

down” from a weird Japanese anime.
Later on, he finds that other people have the same struggle; Asuka searches for the same thing but tries to get it by being the best and scourging everyone else as being weak compared to her especially Shinji who in turn gets even more secluded as he can’t stand the pressure he gets from Asuka. Rei is literally emotionless clone that is in a constant conflict with herself because she wants to be both a normal human being and an emotionless clone because that is what she raised as. Misato deluges herself in hedonistic endeavors while wanting, also, the same thing as Shinji.
Shinji’s father is a special case where he gets the chance to be loved by people around him, but he hates himself so much that he runs from it and in turn causes anyone who wants to love him to think they are not good enough for him. It’s a complete circlejerk that wants to prove that we humans are suffering because we misunderstood each other.
That all leads to Shinji having a choice between destroying the barrier of misunderstanding and connecting all humans in a weird bizarre place that would finally make us come to nothing and therefore have no pain anymore, or not doing it as he realizes that it wasn’t so that reality really was so horrible but that he simply hated it because it was hard.
It was hard to show your true self to people which is a required thing to do if you want to have true relationships with people. The weird place would just be a form of eternal escapism from reality that would never allow us to get to the real thing. Shinji tries in the end to find that thing he was so afraid of (can people really love me) and test it out of the blue by strangling Asuka (He was still influenced by the dream sequence and the strangling scene was the most vivid one as it was the one who made him think that nobody will ever love him in the real world) and in turn she finally breaks and shows her affection for him by putting her hand on his face.
In the end, it a big interpretation to make of the ending but somehow it comes down to that we should stop trying to escape into weird worlds and just face real humans’ relationships with all its flaws and merits.
Plot: Even though what I have just said is the gem of the series, the plot is still flawed. The pacing is bad, and the show fails to convey its message clearly (it might have been on purpose) leading to overall huge confusion that is greatly reduced if you watch the End of Evangelion which is a must if you wish to understand it. The plot is delayed by the angel’s attacks and it all comes up to this:
1. Angel attacks and alarm is sounded
2. Shinji won’t get into the mecha
3. Someone else tries to do it
4. Rei gets hurt
5. Asuka wants to prove herself
6. Both fail
7. Shinji finally does it
8. Shinji: GG no re
9. Make it all last 3x longer if the angel is a handsome young guy.
It gets repetitive after a while and you wish that it just ends already.
Characters:
It has some of the most iconic characters in the anime world. I don’t know the real reason why they became so popular as they aren’t that much developed… but, needless to say, the to have symbolism to them.
Shinji: Gay. Symbolizes probably boyhood, virginity, coming of age.
Asuka: She comes at halfway of the show which is pretty interesting. She changes the dynamics of the show into a more energetic one (might symbolize teenage years?). She is wild and mysterious to Shinji like any other female is when we are having our first interactions with them. She would most likely be a symbol for womanhood, affection, tsundere, sexuality.
Rei: Me_irl. She is Shinji’s mother turned into a young girl that Shinji really likes like Freud liked his mother. She doesn’t really do anything but exist and yet she is probably the most popular girl in the series. She represents motherly love, innocence, seclusion, first sexuality (xD).
Other characters: They’re mostly characterized by one big trait. Like Shinji’s father being obsessed with him getting inside a big huge robot. Misato giving mixed signals to Shinji and being hedonistic. Misato’s boyfriend being mature.
For some reason, there is a penguin in the show.
Soundtrack:
It features one of the most iconic openings ever produced in the universe. But the rest of the songs are not memorable and most of the time there is no music at all (which is kinda nice and refreshing when compared to Hollywood movies) and maybe that is the best thing in the ost that the music comes suddenly and makes you take attention when the show wants you to. The soundtrack for the end of evangelion is excellent though and it all tumbles down to that one song about tumbling.
Art:
There is a lot of mysticism and hidden details. It is not rich in detail as most of the time the scenes are just empty of content, but that’s only in unimportant scenes. On the important ones, the show makes sure to make it filled with detail and meaning. Still, the art is just old as animation has just progressed in the past 20 years. It might have been excellent in that time but right now it is just meh.
Conclusion: Watch it for the plot and message. Even if you have spoiled, watch it as you’re even better off than people who watched it without knowing about it anything. It is a complicated show. Expect to be bored though.

Monster.
I once made my goal to watch the top 100 animes of myanimelist because I figured “Wow, the first three are so gud”. However: one single anime made me realize that not all top 100 animes are equal; some are more equal than the others. This is the one who made me realize that some anime’s on top 100 are just pure trash. Characters: Kenzo Tenma is way too good, and I mean that in the evil/good sense. The biggest thing going about him is his supposed vengeance upon the main bad guy that makes you think would be the trigger for him to turn bad himself. ... |
