- this review contains somewhat spoilers -
After After 7 years, I finally rewatched this and I must say it was a very good decision. The settings, theme and the moral alongside the philosophical thinking really hits differently, especially after all these student years. I don't know how it is in Japan, but I feel like the basic meaning behind all this is still roughly more or less the same.
The biggest thing was that it's not about the goal, but the journey you take. Even though clearly not all (too several) characters didn't get enough screen time but that might be one of the point of
...
this show. (Yes I know due to budget cuts they reduced the episodes and all. they shouldn't have tho). I have not read the manga so I couldn't tell. Either way, I feel like what's the point of introducing them if they don't play an important part towards the plot or are enough important to just hang around. I call due to budget cuts. Either way, the ones who had the "plot role" did their part smoothly. It's just that why to introduce characters that don't pay any real reason towards the plot. I'm sure it's still about the budget that it was supposed to be longer than just a mere 13 episodes.
I liked it when there's still plenty of points to tag yourself into. Not necessary about all the "feel stories" af you might call it but the part of belonging into the community... the SSS community. I would be honored to be part of such. Not only to feel important but all the friends I would make along the way. Like I said, it's not about the goal but the journey. This anime can teach that to you. I doubt it was the main goal but it still allows for such thinking. Especially to my kinds of people who always prefer to be the "background people" or in other words: side characters. Hence I thought that Yui's and Hinata's marriage confession was the cutest thing ever! Especially on the effin baseball field!! (I love baseball btw). It felt much better than Otonashi's and Kanade's confession but that's just me. I would be my real life's side character anyways so I like what is respectfully mine.
Anyways what comes to actually critically part, I must say that upon hearing the rumor (?) about the budget cuts, it really IS seen. At first, the story telling is FAST. Like, really, FAST. The first couple episodes could be divided into several ones and so on, and especially getting enough screen time for everyone really would require the needed 24(+) lasting-long-series. Regardless, if you were a busy person that doesn't like fillers, then this _is_ the right anime for you because this doesn't hold back. The episodes are not the only way but the many general actions during the series as well. The one detail I pay attention to is that if someone say during an intense situation like: "run!", people usually just stand there, wait a good bit and often are commanded after _another effin call_ until they finally make an action. This anime, however, did not commit to such deals .And I liked it, because when times ge rough, act and then maybe later think because sometimes it really can save your life. Well, easy to say for being the inspector party and not the actor party... anyways, I really liked that because the thin I mentioned only brings more issues. And this show had other things to mention so that it didn't get stuck with the usual ones that most of the movies from Hollywood and alike, some animes as well, do that. It's just me but I find it annoying.
Anyways, I really enjoyed the telling, especially after graduating because the first time watching this was just to find the feels. Back then I was so much more cynical and like "don't-have-feels"-type of person. After all these experienced yeas I must say that I have become way softer. But still it doesn't change that fact that the show really tries to get the most out of you, either by force or due the long way... It depends on the person, really.
and for disclaimer: if there's any anime elitist to disagree with me, just msg me directly, I have stuff to say.
tl;dr: nope, I'm not gonna shorten it for you, read it out you lazy bastard!!

As a half deaf person, I cried several times throughout the movie. It was so heartwarming in the end. During this journey I felt so much disgust towards a person, just so to cry over them in the end. It was scary how realistic Nishimiya's speaking was because if you're actually a deaf person, you really cannot make difference between vowels or consonants etc. It was scary how realistic it was but I felt that. The first big felt was one of the messages about "Didn't hear but okay" or something like that. I genuinely cried and movie was only 15 minutes or so. At
...
the climax I cried a lot. Not much to add.
Also this impact was bigger than anything else I had seen thus far so I had to lower every single anime's score by one just due to this.
I just want to say that please, please respect us who can't hear well. If I was to see that in person, I would pretty much beat you to coma, at least.
Please, we can't hear but we understand.

-this review contains minor spoilers, read at your own risk-
To sum my experience after watching this anime, I was left somewhat unsatisfied. I feel like it's missing something but I don't know what.
Overall a solid anime with a different approach to a plot by giving multiple points of views and/or truths. Maybe the alternate outcomes and going through them was up to the watcher to decide what to believe at first. I probably kept too much in mind that Battler was also watching so I took any new info suspiciously at first. The ending in this anime, with lots of questionable events was bit unsatisfying,
...
in my opinion. Maybe I became too reliant on the absolute truth and didn't want to rely on any assumptions anymore? I felt like I needed to really see the real truth after not relying on any methods on the way that weren't in red.
What comes to fillers some either seemed to have nothing to do with the story or then left other more-or-less related things unexplained. They only seemed to explain some supporting characters' behavior or background a little bit. Some offered additional information that wasn't covered, so why to bother? At least they bothered me a bit. Though some of them were funny, like the brass knuckle or touhou-in-my-anime.
Music was pretty good, actually the reason why I found this anime. Had probably too high hopes though. Not much to add.
Characters were pretty different with some twists or surprises but in my opinion, a bit too large in number. There were rather many characters with only minor impacts on the plot (well other than being killed) so you start to think that should they need more screen time or not. Especially the first episodes introduced a lot of characters at once. Some characters were probably very successful, if it's dependent on how I viewed them and how strong thoughts I had about them. Like Maria, for example. At first I really hated her for being such a crybaby but afterwards I started to actually like her and feeling bit sorry for her. And my god I LOOOVEE Beato's laugh. It's the best thing in this whole anime.
Overall a solid anime to watch but perhaps the VN has more to offer. I haven't seen it but a lot of people seem to be recommending it over this anime.
I say it in red: Beato's laugh is awesome!

I found the game version some time ago on steam and was probably the first contender for the "things to give feels". After reading the summary and some Steam reviews it started to sound interesting but I didn't buy the game. Couple years after I finally watched this anime and it was different than I expected but because I misunderstood the plot summary.
Story was nice and simple and well-fitted for the unusual 5 episodes long visual novel (or "series" as I would say). Plot was simple at first but at least for me it started to create small questions I would have had an answer
...
to, like how was Hoshino's life during those years before meeting Kuzuya or why he decided to stay there in the first place.
There were some CGI scenes to make the art look even more pretty, but half of them were completely unnecessary and could have used for something else instead.
Music was pretty silent at first but in some scenes it really started to play and sounded good. Also, the sound effects were loud and kinda awesome at times.
Characters were nice and somewhat classical: overly talkative and positive person and slightly more silent and even grumpy one. Mixing two extremities usually brings interesting situations and interactions with one another. Their relationship with each other can get predictable, however.
Enjoyment was surprisingly nice because seeing this being ONA kinda got me worried about its quality as an anime in general but luckily, for me at least, it didn't. It would have great amount of material for finding all the mistakes, the big and the small ones, though. Part of me says that the series was too short that "I would have wanted to see what happens next" but the last scene kinda tells the viewer how it would end up afterwards.
Overall this was kinda nice and short anime to watch and I might look forward to get the game as well, if it comes on sale. The 5 episodes still had plenty of content in them and can get you to seek out more information of what's happening or have happened. Perhaps the game could tell some more then. Have to admit that Hoshino is adorable for being a robot.

-This review doesn't contain spoilers-
I probably shouldn't have watched this dunk because the plot got even more complicated towards the end. Other than that it was a solid anime, I suppose. Also the first one I completed on one sitting. At least it was that interesting.
Story was okay good but was getting more and more complicated towards later episodes. It started to even cause paradoxes if you didn't get the point of the plot which started to seem like it was cheating. But the first half was really nice, actually. It was simple enough and gave a nice reason for characters to act so.
Arts, as
...
usual, was really nice for me because it just has to be a cartoon to guarantee a 9. It still seemed to be low-budged due to looking much like hand drawn at times but I didn't mind it. Just a small details some people might pay attention to. Music was surprisingly good because I immediately started to nod with the rhythm. It's something I don't do often. Also I found it very fitting for multiple occasions.
Characters were nice overall. Some of them, however, were not always explainable and had some gimmicks or weird moments even that just didn't seem to fit them too well, whether to not explain it or not fitting their character.
Enjoyment was mediocre. I first started to like it but it started to get more and more complicated, as stated before. I might have been too drunk watching this but that's what I felt like. Either way there was too much plot stuff and weird turns and things in it to not like it too much. I wished there was more humor in the series because it would have greatly balanced out the sadder parts.
Overall, it was a solid anime but I was expecting a lot more from it due to recommendations. Still I didn't cry and didn't find it too sad to be honest. It's just slightly confusing anime that you might like if you like complicated plots and sensitive girls.
Also I wasn't supposed to write this long review.

-This review contains spoilers-
First of all, I thought this might be a good movie. I didn't find it as one. I was expecting it to be something, but got disappointed. It's just plain, boring and not having any changes at all and even the viewer can guess the ending after half way or something.
If this movie was having a message in it, I didn't notice it. Long story short, their mother died in bombing, they sought a place to live, aunt didn't like them and they moved to live in a shelter, kid died. End of story. What's the big deal? You could have guessed
...
it actually. There seemed to be no plot at all in the first half of the movie, minus their mother dying.
Story was pretty decently boring. It could have potential to be a better one if it would have given a goal for the characters and then given obstacles for them needing to get pass through. But there really wasn't any. Art was nice because it was those older types of cartoons and I'm literally easily impressed by it if it's just a cartoon. It doesn't save this, though. Sound was boring, effects were good enough but I was expecting more of them. Music was plain and similar every time. It could have existed more, even. Characters were okay-ish because they made me give opinions out of them. Older brother was okay for knowing what to do in certain situations so I have to give credit for that. Sister, however, was just annoying like the toddlers are. I understand it but the movies is just missing the point with it. It just annoys and gives brother more stuff to be worried about. Movie couldn't make any use of she just being a child, which I was expecting at least. Aunt was understandable but I was expecting her to be even more angry or punishing. Enjoyment was pretty bad after all. I was expecting stuff to happen but it didn't. It just didn't.
Overall, I say I don't get what people find in this. Maybe because it's sad overall but so what? Are you supposed to always feel sad if someone else have it that way? Maybe I didn't feel any sympathy for them but on the other hand the movie didn't want to give me any reason to. A plot twist and more plot and happening would have helped this movie a lot. I mostly find it plain and boring. Even giving some footage of the father's battle or even death on the ship would have been something. Also, the fireflies barely had anything to do with the movie.
I want my 1½ hours back
