Summertime render is a mix of mystery and shounen-styled action. The former is more predominant in the intro and the latter takes up more and more space especially in the 2nd half of the show. It's worth pointing out since it affects the vibe of the show significantly.

This anime has a little bit for everyone. For those who enjoy both genres and don't mind the story transforming from one genre to the other, it's probably a great show. For those who don't as much, it'll feel like this change made the show lose potential and became a decent/good show only.

With that said, time for my ... thoughts! The first half of the show focuses on mystery which was more gripping. The story had enough bits and pieces there to keep me hooked, and the shocking moments of the first half really kept me in my seat. Kept me thinking and wondering what was going on.

However... the story does take a more shounen focus in the second half with fight scenes that are somewhat ridiculous and plot-army, along with lots of slowdowns mid-fight to talk about a bunch of complex stuff. I've watched my fair share of shounen to get a bit tired of it, so frankly I was kind of slogging through the last few episodes because all sense of mystery at that point was totally lost and it was just lots of fighting without much depth. As you may be guessing, this part of the show was where I lost some interest. Thankfully, the last few episodes in particular were just a few.

Aside from that, characters were alright. I thought Shinpei and Hizuru were great, others were a bit more mid. Music was alright but kind of forgettable for the most part. Animation was decent.

There are a few tiny spoiling indications to this review, but I am mostly keeping it at a minimum or as a hint (also, you should be aware that there's mature content, which if you're not expecting it, now you know xd)

The show was kind of a whirlwind. While I can see the appeal, it just felt a bit rushed to me. One second, Akira and Ryou are best friends and are working to uncover the world of demons... And then, 7-8 episodes after... Well, you know what I'm trying to get to here. If this show was maybe given another episode or two of ... backstory for the characters, it would have created enough emotional appeal (for me personally).

Overall though, I did enjoy the show (although personally the nudity at some parts was a bit over the top) and there are a few decent soundtracks here and there (I've heard better though). I do really like the concept of the devilman himself and there are some interesting lessons to be learned here.

I have never written a review for any anime, so apologies if this is not perfect. Before I continue however, I just want to say how masterful this show is, and why, in my opinion, is anime of the season.

With a lot of plots in anime, there is most often an end goal, a resolution that can be foreseeable. I am nowhere near someone who is truly experienced with anime, but for the reason that this show is more or so about the journey makes it really interesting.

The difference between the harsher moments and the cheerful moments almost makes the show more real. The characters ... bring out important philosophical questions with just mere conversation, and the supporting characters and entities help make those points. Their ignorance of many of humanities current issues, like war, makes the viewer think of our current world and relate.

Of course, for the characters themselves, they did an outstanding job of balancing the characters, of creating silly scenes but not overdoing it. Chito and Yuuri's contradicting personalities help blend in crucial scenes in the show and give more essence to any philosophy attempting to be presented in the show. Nuko is also really cute :3

In terms of art-style, I really like the blend between the scenes showing the characters and then the detail on the different pieces of technology; It helps build the contrast. The music is also really nice, and I love how they incorporated it into the show.

Overall, I highly recommend this if you want something fresh. I am not a fan of the Slice of Life genre, but they incorporate it here well.
