I understand that numerous people have stated that Mayoiga was disappointing for them and was a bit more on the comedic side than expected. I agree that it is somewhat comedic but I absolutely disagree that this series was disappointing.
Mayoiga tells the tale of 30 people on a bus who are travelling to a village where they can supposedly become a new person. While I do admit that 30 persons are a bit too much to for 12 episodes, it pushed the plot of Mayoiga forward and added a bit of meaning to it. Allow me to explain:
These people from multiple backgrounds, all want to
...
go to a place wherein they can escape from their previous lives. The panic they face as well as the tribulations that they experience reflect to their previous traumas. While all the characters could not be fleshed out, we are still able to witness the journey of some as they undergo catharsis.
Our main character is in someways stereotypical - always wanting to protect everyone and be understanding. However, I'd like to believe this is also a reflection of his trauma. As he reaches his stage of catharsis, you can see him lashing out against his best friend (and quite appropriately so) - which goes against his usual mentality.
It is obvious that there was an intended message behind these characters and their traumas. And that message is beautiful in my opinion. In my own words, this anime is about the choice of accepting your psychological traumas. Sure you can get rid of them, albeit not easily, but you will be getting rid of a part of you.
For this core message and the journey I took to get this message, I give the story a 9/10.
I'll be honest I don't care about the art much, it was quite alright and definitely not intolerable. It isn't a major push or pull factor of this anime.
The same goes for the sound.
The characters as I said before, could not all be fleshed out but the ones that were able to undergo development were quite great.
I definitely enjoyed this anime, to be honest - it surprised me. I imagined that I would experience some heavy gore and disturbing stuff but I was instead greeted by an interesting core message. I'm thankful for that.
In conclusion, don't expect gore and brutality from this anime. Enjoy the catharsis of a group of characters as they accept who they are.
