It baffles me that this anime is so tragically underrated. There are anime considered "deep" and "life changing" that take cheap, supernatural, "deus ex machina" approaches to resolve all their problems, stealing away the realistic elements they tried so hard to convey. We're just not allowed to say that, because we would be considered heartless assholes for pointing out this truth. Nonetheless, this point still stands, whether you like these various series or not.
"Welcome to the NHK" does not do that. Through the mishaps of a bizarre and interesting cast, it keeps it real. Despite the sarcastic, dark, off the wall humor, it still keeps
...
things real.
If you're reading this review, you probably have some sense of the basic plot already. The story focusses on Sato Tatsuhiro, a college, drop out and a recluse, also known as a hikikomori, and the various people he encounters through his journey: Misaki Nakahara, a mysterious girl, claiming to possess the cure for his illness, Kaoru Yamazaki, an otaku with the dream of become a famous game designer, Hitomi Kashiwa, Sato's senpai now a public servant, and so on. Their lives ultimately weave together to create an amazing tapestry of comprehensive insanity. Despite their unique struggles, the one thread that ties these misfits together is this: the sheer fact alone that they DO suffer. That's what makes the anime so beautiful. Everyone has really felt something one of these characters go through, be it sadness, fear, anxiety, hopelessness, neglect, and so on. All the same, their disorders and problems don't define their character. They are still are unique, well developed, stand alone characters. The story does an fantastic job combining comedy and drama. One episode, you're laughing. The next, you're sobbing. But, it does so tastefully. The ending was what impressed me the most. Without giving too much away, there's no magical resolution to everyone's problems. While they are still hopeful, they hold true to how a situation might go. It's believable. It's relatable. It's real.
This anime truly is life changing. I have talked to several people who have talked about watching this during a very difficult time in their life and how it helped them pull through them.
I am one of those people.
That truly is the power of a masterpiece.
