My first review on MAL. I wrote it quick based off a bullet list i created while watching the show over time. Anyway, enjoy.
Hell Yes!
Kill la Kill is great. No, its so much more than that, its damn near perfect. It hits all of the right notes and then takes those notes and turns them into something more exciting than basic piano chords. Something more like a piano beating up Bach because he's trying to take over the universe with his clothes. Let that sink in.
Everything is over the top, and it is so awesome.
Always Moving
The story of Kill La Kill is simple. A high
...
school girl named Ryuko(Ryuuko) Matoi enrolls in Honnouji Academy in order to find more about her dads killer, and then proceed with taking revenge on said person. The story seems straight forward but in true Gainax tradition there is a fair share of revelation to be dropped, but one of the fun things about this show is the fact that they drop so much and with such finesse that even if your expecting it, your going to be wrong about it. There's a lot to take in but the show pulls it off without much of a problem at all because it explains the plot as it gives it. By doing this you wont rack your brain about stuff that happened in previous episodes because its already explained, freeing the viewer to focus on the now of the show. Hell it even did its recap in a couple of seconds whereas most anime take an episode.
Characters
Even though the plot moves fast, it somehow makes time to give most of the side characters some type of backstory. The characters who more or less only appear in a couple of episodes get some type of backstory. This is great because most of the characters are so unique that they beg for character development anyway. From the light hearted Mako to the powerful Satsuki these characters will make you laugh, cry, and shout without a moments hesitation, and that is when Kill La Kill gets awesome.
A highlight of the show is the interaction between Matoi and her friends. These scenes are some of the more heart tugging moments of the series. The same goes with the interaction between Satsuki and her subordinates.
Gleefully Over The Top
Over the top does not even begin to describe how crazy this show is. It takes the Magical Girl genre and amplifies it into something that completely defies logic while staying within the realm of believable. See the amazing this is not that it is so over the top, its the fact that it can be so over the top and still feel believable within the world that it is based in. For example, there is a faction in the show called the Nudist Beach who only wears light beams over their privates as protection, and they never feel unbelievable. Fanserve is a plot point in this anime and save a few weird scenes, it is done better than most other shows.
There is a lot of other fan service too, like callbacks to shows like Gurren Laggan and Evangelion. It also calls back to western culture a lot too.
Overall
Overall, Kill La Kill is perfect save from a few questionable scenes involving the fanservice. Its fast paced, action packed, side splitting funny, and completely over the top take on the Magical Girl genre and should not be missed at all if your a fan of anime.
9.8 Out of 10
Things worth touching on
The animation of Kill La Kill is iffy, its for the most part great but sometimes it can dip.
Sometimes it may make you feel weird, but thats ok.
