I'm going to make this quick.
WATCH THIS SHOW IF:
--you like comedy and teen angst
--you like seeing shirtless boys
--you want to laugh and be at the edge of your seat
--you like dramatic swimming scenes
--you like lighthearted anime
--you easily ship characters together
...
DO NOT WATCH THIS SHOW IF:
--you get triggered by fanservice
--you want a deep plot and strong backstories
--you hate standard character themes (the nerd, the comic relief, etc)
--you don't like swimming or sports anime in general
If you said YES to most of the 'Watch this show if" points, then sit back with some snacks and a smile, because you're going to enjoy this show. Free is a lighthearted sports anime with just enough angst and drama to keep it interesting. Stunning animation and relatable characters, paired with overwhelming fanservice, make this anime very popular with the teenage female demographic. The music is catchy, the plot is satisfying, and there's a lot of teamwork to cheer about. Overall, it's a very enjoyable show.
However, Free is not the show to watch intently, looking at plot and character development. Most of the characters fit a certain 'type'. There's the strong and silent Haru, the caring Makoto, the goofy and child-like Nagisa, the nerd Rei, and the angsty and violent Rin. Using these character tropes, it is easy to determine where the plot will go. The backstories of the characters, besides the Rin/Haru conflict, are also not fleshed out. Don't watch this anime expecting anything more than a comedic swimming drama.
Thanks for reading, hope this helped!
