Garbage, to be avoided. [Spoilers ahead] The stupid and nonsensical premise combined with the slow pacing and the repetitiveness of the events makes this really tedious to watch. Even when the mystery is being revealed and things are explained it feels underwhelming and anticlimactic, because none of the event or the characters were that interesting to begin with. On top of that you have all these ridiculous and graphic deaths every other episode which contribute nothing beyond shock value, until you become desensitized and stop caring about any of the characters (and the ending is just comical, when everyone just starts killing one another at

random - just for the sake of creating a hollywood action film style over the top climax of everything burning down and everyone dying (except the main characters obviously)).
Plots which heavily depend on supernatural elements are hard to pull off of because supernatural events by their nature don't make sense and are unpredictable, as they are based on ad hoc logic made up by the writers. So for this sort of show to succeed you need to create compelling characters and good background story. This show has none of that (yes, the main heroin is a cute kuudere girl but the rest of the characters were seriously uninteresting, guess because most of them had to die for the sake of the plot). I would strongly recommend watching Summertime Render instead of this which is a mystery/horror anime done right, or Anohana which is one of the best examples of how supernatural elements can be effectively employed to tell a good story with compelling characters.

After a very charming and entertaining 1st season (and rightfully acclaimed), a duller second part, now comes this absolute stinker of a 2nd season. The season totally lacks everything that made the first part of the 1st season so charming and endearing - all the humor and the charming character interactions are completely gone. What we get instead is overblown drama and completely gratuitous violence and gore which totally ruined for me the original spirit of the show which for me felt like a slice of life comedy rather than an action thriller. And let's be honest, the show's premise (at least initially) was more
...
of a parody that wasn't supposed to make much sense. But now everything has suddenly gotten so serious and dramatic, and are we now supposed to take seriously the idiotic plot and all these assassins with superman-like powers that fly in the air? As a kids show, which is how the first season was, this wasn't a problem because the focus was on the comedy. But now when the tone got so much more serious, the whole thing just feels extremely dumb and over the top. And as I said, I found the extreme violence and gore this season totally unnecessary and inappropriate for what is essentially a kid's show. The only good thing that remained is the top notch visuals which feel like they were wasted.

People love to dump on Rent a Girlfriend because of the brainless plot and the snail-pace story progress. But oh boy, is that show a masterpiece compared to this cringe fest, and I simply can't understand its popularity or why it's so highly rated. First of all, the show is a complete insult to people that struggle with social anxiety and have trouble fitting in. This is the most shameless and lazy wish-fulfilling escapist fantasy that I've seen in recent memory. No chance in hell that a literal model would fall for this tiny creepy guy who dose absolutely NOTHING throughout the whole show or
...
has any meaningful interactions with her. This is the ultimate loser fantasy of "what if the hottest chick in class falls for me for no apparent reason while I do absolutely nothing about myself" which is not a recipe for a good plot. No wonder they made the girl so dumb and clueless that she literally fell in love with the protag because he offered her candy when they hang in the library (??!!). Yes, the characters are this cringe (and what's with this awful character design? Why did they make the girl look like a a woman in her 20s and the guy like he's a 10 yo boy?).
Concerning the writing, the two main characters rarely have any interesting or meaningful dialogue, literally every scene is just about them getting embarrassed around each other after finding themselves in some kind of cringy situation (and without the show ever making clear why they have a chemistry in the first place). This is like a low IQ version of Takagi-san, without the witty exchanges and the good humor. It's like watching cringe in slow motion, so if you enjoy second-hand embarrassment this is the show for you.
And aside from this, the show is extremely slow, and there was absolutely no reason to make two seasons out of it. It just drags and drags with very minimal character development or story progression. There are plenty of good romance anime about an "unpopular guy gets a girl" that there is no reason to watch this trash. The best ones are Nagatoro and My Dress-up Darling, each great in its own way. Another very good one is the recent "The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses", which despite the ridiculous premise has very appealing characters with heart-warming interactions (a honorable mention is "My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999" which is a shoujo). A truly great and underrated show that deals with social anxiety in very realistic and relatable way is Watamote and I can't recommend it enough. So please save your time and watch something else.

Sorry folks, this show is just dull and poorly written and I honestly don't understand the hype. Yes, the main protagonist is a charming character with an interesting personality, but the way they made her oh-so-clever is very irritating and not believable. This is a textbook case of lazy and poorly written Mary Sue trope. Her "solving" all these contrived "mysteries" every other episode got old very quickly because it's not very believable how she's able to solve them every single time by going with very thin clues. Admittedly I'm not a big fan of detective mysteries, but I think that even if you were,
...
this is just not very good mystery writing because every time the focus is not on the mysteries themselves and how she solves them (because it's always just random guessing and jumping to conclusions that magically happen to be true) but their sole purpose is to highlight what a clever genius the main protagonist is and how stupid everyone else around her is, and this as I said gets old very quickly.
Another problem is the pacing and lack of interesting plot or character development. The characters and their background stories feel very uninteresting and non-relatable because they receive little screentime as new characters are constantly being introduced for a few episodes and then you forget about them after their problem becomes solved. As a result I ended up not really caring about the solution for any of the mysteries because they concern some random Joe that was introduced last episode and he's gonna disappear for the next (nor do I care for all these generic court ladies which are hard to keep track of because they are all the same).
For these two reasons the show felt extremely dull and repetitive. It has no reason to go on for 20+ episodes when there is so little development or verity. There is a hint of romance between the protagonist and the ikemen guy, but it really doesn't go anywhere and the show's almost over by now. Here's a good example of what I'm talking about (warning: spoiler). There's a dramatic episode where the girl uncovers a plot to make the ikemen guy get killed, and she saves his life at the last moment while getting badly hurt. You expect there would be some kind of development in their relationship as a result (because they both clearly show a lot of concern for each other), but nope, next episode things go back to business as usual just like in the beginning, as if nothing happened. So whatever tension or drama the show occasionally manages to create it all goes for nothing.
I finally decided to drop it after 20 episodes and I honestly regret sticking with the show for so long. There are quite a few similar animes about girl empowerment that are much better than this. One of the best of them is Ascendance of a Bookworm which I would highly recommend. Another good one is Arte. "The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent" (particularly 1st season) is decent too, and so is "Doctor Elise" from this season and also "Parallel World Pharmacy" (though MC is a boy). There was a recent anime with almost identical setting called "Raven Of The Inner Palace" which was also set in fantasy Chinese imperial court with a very similar female protagonist who solves mysteries (but it's about ghosts and the supernatural rather than medicine). Wasn't the biggest fan of the show but even that was more interesting and engaging than this snooze.
