Haha, I found it funnier after watching the OVA's. The tv series and the OVA's are complete polar opposites in terms of animation, tone, atmosphere. There is absolutely no comedy.
You start to get emotionally invested into the show after 50+ episodes. You start to understand the personalities of ALL the characters. It's an overall VERY SAD show but the comedy balances it out.
I don't exactly remember. 62 does sound accurate because I remember watching and reading around ~30 episodes of filler. Be prepared to shed manly tears.
