Notes about my rating system, which has bowed to public pressure to only actually really rate things on a 5-10 scale or so but I give the excuse that for every watchable thing on the positive side of a 5, there is that degree of a negative thing as well but you rarely see those ratings because no one bothers watching the utter garbage they hate. Make sense?
What's MOST important to me when determining a rating (with some of my favorites as examples)?
- Completeness of the world and environment you're in. Putting extreme detail into casual aspects of the world the characters are in and how they interact with their surroundings really helps to immerse you in the overall feel of the story. Example: Ghost in the Shell SAC / SAC2
- Treating the viewer as someone better than a complete idiot. You don't need to explain everything: show, don't tell! Let us figure it out ourselves and we're going to enjoy it a lot more. Example: GitS Arise
- Character progression and interaction. Example: Shirobako
- X-Factors, small pieces of shows that are able to really give me something amazing, or something that stands out in some way. Example: Music in Madoka (although basically everything about Madoka is great, heh). Episode 13 of SakuraSou. The opening song of Bokurano. I usually try and write about these things in reviews.
10 - Few and far between can get a 10. I have to truly love it and it has to hit on what's important to me (see below).
9 - Excellent series. Didn't want to stop watching. Felt involved in the story. The gap between 9 and 10 is much larger than 8 and 9.
6-8 - Watchable shows that I always finish and enjoy to some degree
5 - Pretty bland / awkward series that might have one sweet episode in the bunch or one sort of redeeming quality.
4 - Watched it, but only because I often feel like I have to finish something once I start it, even if I don't want to.
1-3 - Gave up due to varying degrees of terrible.
Notes about MAL:
I wish MAL had a thing for your "Planning to Watch" list that told you the dates that the show actually aired from. It would be really handy for making sure you did things in the right order and helping you plan what you wanted to actually watch.
I know you can change list settings, but there don't appear to be options to change the "Plan to Watch" section, just the others.
If anyone reads this, tell them to add that as a profile editable section for your list. This website is ALMOST perfect.
