A mess of Japanese culture and anime parodies, dumb jokes and doesn't get going till the 50th episode. And even then they manage to make it a dumb joke. I wouldn't
recommend it to anyone. Avoid.
Until you watched every other interesting anime show. When you'll have nothing else to watch. Gintama parodies seinen, and manga/anime as a whole, by creating the ultimate one. Very light-toned, sketch-based comedy sitcom. No complex storylines, no drama, nothing to give a thought about.
However, the show doesn't feel lacking in any department. The characters might be simple and straightforward. yet each has a distinct identity and traits. with well-defined relationship dynamics between them. Each of those is stupidly funny and hilarious. Each episode is a mix-and-match of those characters to deliver laughs and gags, which feel genuinely funny and natural. This is not Gintama. I mean, it has the same story arc and the same characters, but overall it felt like another parody sketch, overextended by mistake. The animation style is probably the main culprit. Then the action, pacing, story, soundtrack. When it was over, I was left with a feeling of "Wait, is that it? Where's the real final?".
